Weekend spotlight
shines on mom

IT'S ALL about mom this weekend, with events around the island planned to honor that special woman who brought you into this world. Here's my take on some of the more interesting options out there for Mother's Day ...

HEAD OVER to Kahala Mall on Saturday for an afternoon of free entertainment and a chance to win a limousine ride, dinner and a $100 mall gift certificate for Mom. Island Rhythm 98.5 takes over the Kahala Mall Center Stage from 12 to 2 p.m. for the first ever "Mother-Daughter Lava Lava Contest" ...

Judges will look for the cutest, most creative and most colorful matching lava lava on stage, and Baba B will serenade your mom with cuts from his album, "Local Boy." Halau Na Mamo will also perform after the contest. Call 732-7736 ...

LOOKING TO impress Mom this year, or maybe just make up for all those years you didn't do anything for her? While not the most inexpensive of options, a nighttime sail with Wild Side Specialty Tours should take her breath away.

Forget about dinner at a restaurant or taking Mom out to a show in town. Make reservations and head out to the Waianae Small Boat Harbor, where the people from Wild Side will take you out to enjoy sunset on the open ocean and an unobstructed view of the star-filled heavens above. Dinner is taken care of as well, served right there on the boat.

Another plus is the privacy you'll get -- only 12 people can enjoy the ride at a time, so if you bring the whole family, it's like you're chartering a boat just for Mom. Now there's a Mother's Day gift! The cost is $95 per person (save 15 percent with an Oceanic Kupa'a Card) for the three-hour sail leaving at 6 p.m. daily through Tuesday. Wild Side Specialty. Call 306-7273, or check out www.sailhawaii.com ...

RATHER KEEP it simple and help a good cause at the same time? Get up early on Sunday and head to the Windward side for the 41st annual Kaneohe Kiwanis Mother's Day Pancake Breakfast. Enjoy a buffet of pancakes, Portuguese sausage, scrambled eggs and rice with Mom, and support the Castle High School Key Club and other Kiwanis projects.

Griddles start sizzling at 6:30 a.m. on Mother's Day and won't stop until 11 a.m. at the Ben Parker Elementary School Cafeteria. If your mom's not an a.m. person, get the pancakes, sausage and eggs to go, and serve breakfast in bed ...

SPEAKING OF a good cause, this weekend also brings the annual letter carriers' food drive. In its 10th year, this food drive is designed for the lazy. Hey, sign me up!

More than 1,000 Hawaii letter carriers will accept nonperishable food donations on Saturday. All you have to do is leave the food out for your letter carrier, and they'll take it to the Hawaii Foodbank. Apartment dwellers should see a collection tub in a common area designated for donations. Last year, more than 275,000 pounds of food was collected.
