’Bows blow lead
for another loss

From staff and wire reports

SAN JOSE, Calif. >> The San Jose State Spartans know to never look a gift horse in the mouth, just take advantage of the situation.

Scoring 12 of their 13 runs after two were out in an inning, the Spartans rolled over the Hawaii Rainbows 13-4 yesterday afternoon in a Western Athletic Conference game at Municipal Stadium.

Hawaii actually led when Lane Nogawa reached on a throwing error by SJSU third baseman Kevin Frandsen and scored on Gregg Omori's first-inning triple to center field.

But Sean Yamashita, who retired eight of the first nine Spartans he faced, ran into difficulty compounded by a couple of infield singles and an error by right fielder Tim Montgomery after two were out in the third.

Dino Quintero doubled to right-center field and moved to third on Nathan Corrick's infield hit to short. Yamashita then induced Gabe Lopez, the Spartans' top hitter at .378, to hit a shallow fly ball to right for what should have been the third out. Montgomery came in on the run, had a play on the ball, but dropped it.

Quintero scored to tie the game. Before Yamashita finally retired the 11th batter of the inning, the Spartans had scored five unearned runs. Bryan Baker's single to right plated two teammates, Frandsen dribbled an infield single to short for an RBI and Travis Becktel walked with the bases loaded to force in the fifth run.

"We did a great job today with two strikes and two outs. It's a big part of our game to be tenacious with two outs," said Spartan coach Sam Piraro.

In the fourth inning, with two outs and Corrick on first via a walk, Hector Zamora belted his sixth home run of the season over the right field wall. A double by Baker finished Yamashita and Frandsen hit reliever Matt Le Ducq's first pitch to center for an RBI single.

Le Ducq was touched for a single, walk and consecutive doubles by Lopez and Zamora for three more runs after two were out in the sixth.

"Four of the innings in which they scored started with two outs and no one on base. We just couldn't close it," said Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso. "There were some tough ground balls we couldn't make plays on, but it was just an old fashioned butt-kicking. We are what we are."

The Rainbows, held to four hits through six innings, got to SJSU starter Jahseam George for two runs in the seventh on a double by Montgomery, a walk to Chad Boudon and Julian Russell's double off the left-field wall.

Then, with two out in the ninth, consecutive singles by pinch hitter Aaron Pribble, Boudon, Russell and Grady Symonds produced the final UH run.

The Spartans (38-13 overall, 16-7 WAC) won their fifth consecutive game while the Rainbows (15-31, 4-16) lost their 11th consecutive game at Municipal Stadium over the past four seasons.

Hawaii will send freshman right-hander Ricky Bauer to the mound today (live at 10 a.m. on 1420 KCCN).

Note: The Rainbows return home today on United Flight 63 scheduled to arrive at 9:46 p.m.
