Sea Warriors, Seasiders
to play for national berth

The No. 1 Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team will play Hawaii Pacific for the fourth time this season, this time with a berth in the NCAA Div. II national tournament on the line today.

The Seasiders advanced to the final by beating Sonoma State 5-1 while the Sea Warriors took care of Cal Poly Pomona 5-0.

The Seasiders swept their doubles events, with Adrienn Hegedus and Amy Sun shutting out Katie McCain and Nicole Warm 8-0. In the singles, Petra Gaspar and Tomoko Sukegawa won their matches 6-0, 6-0. Leslie Miles was the only Seasider to lose, falling to Deah Toby 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot.

Hawaii Pacific also swept its doubles matches, and assured another day in Laie when Loni Matsunaga and Shakti Stream won their singles matches quicker than their teammates.

The Seasiders are 40-2 against the Sea Warriors in individual matches over the past two years.

Hilo tennis seasons finished: The No. 19 Hawaii-Hilo tennis teams could not pull off upsets in the first round of their regionals yesterday, with both teams losing to UCSan Diego 5-0.

The No. 19 women's team fell behind at San Diego, Calif., when they were swept in all three doubles matches. Nathalia Jung and Krystal Hangai put up the most fight, losing to Lyndsey Tadlock and Julie Westerman 9-7.

Richard Kornek and Paul Adams were the closest to winning for the men at Laie, taking Dan Albrecht and Mike Meyer to a tie break before losing 9-8 (4). The Vulcans' Raul Massa was beating Jeff Wilson 7-5, 2-1 in the fourth spot when the match was called because San Diego clinched it with two other singles wins.

Men rained out: The Brigham Young-Hawaii won two of three doubles matches over UC Davis yesterday to take a 2-1 lead before rain washed out the singles portion of the West regional. Singles matches will resume where they left off today at 9 a.m.

Big names at BYUH basketball camp

Hall of Fame coach Pete Newell, Hawaii coach Riley Wallace, Utah coach Rick Majerus and the Japanese national team coach Kohama Mototaki headline next week's inaugural Hawaii International Basketball Academy, a clinic designed for coaches, at Brigham Young-Hawaii.

"These are some of the technicians and clinicians in our sport and it's a great opportunity for coaches in Hawaii to listen to some of the best," said BYU-Hawaii coach Ken Wagner. "Part of the reason this came about was to fill a void. There haven't been a lot of clinics just for coaches. We are planning for this to be an annual event."

The clinic will be held at Cannon Activities Center from 6-10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $100 for coaches and $20 for students.

Majerus and his Utes will be in this December's Rainbow Classic. The Utah coach said he will open those practices to anyone who attends the HIBA clinic.

For more information, contact Wagner at 293-3760, 293-3751 or 293-3764.

Vulcans also camping: The annual Vulcan Basketball School, featuring Hawaii-Hilo coach Jeff Law and former UHH coach Jimmy Yagi, is scheduled for June 24-27.

The camp is open to boys and girls, ages 8 through high school, and will be held at the UHH Old Gym and Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Sangha Hall.

Tuition for the four-day school is $100. For more information contact co-camp director Eric Sanchez at 959-9052 (Big Island).
