The University of Hawaii is launching an advertising campaign tomorrow that promotes the 10-campus system as "a world of learning open to everyone." UH ads focus on

The 10-day, $116,000 campaign consists of advertisements featuring success stories of nine students and faculty in all the daily newspapers in Hawaii. All 10 campuses support the campaign, with financial support also provided by the UH Professional Assembly, General Growth Properties Inc. and Victoria Ward Ltd.
Pele Award winner Alex Viarnes' black-and-white photographs will accompany the profiles, as well as the introductory and closing ads.
The students and faculty members featured in the campaign include:
>> Julia "Koewa" Martin, a single mother who for two years walked 14 miles to Maui Community College from Makawao to pursue an education in accounting.
>> Paul Coleman, a UH-Manoa astronomy professor and avid surfer who is believed to be the first Hawaiian to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy.
>> Becky Niniaukapealii Kawaihae, last year's queen of the Merrie Monarch Royal Court and a UH-Hilo graduate who received a Truman Scholarship to pursue graduate studies at UH-Manoa.
>> Ralph Shoji Kouchi, a welding instructor at Kauai Community College, who used his expertise to create shelters after Hurricane Iniki and also creates sculptures for public display.
>> Tom "Pohaku" Stone, a master's candidate in Pacific Island studies and a master of Hawaiian sledding (hee holua).
>> Barbara Wong, a retired Honolulu assistant police chief now studying to become a lawyer at the William S. Richardson School of Law.
>> Jack Bredin and Paul Noyes, firefighters and UH-West Oahu students.
>> Danielle Paschal, a Leeward Community College dance student who conducts workshops at area high schools on the value of education with the community college's Student 2 Student program.
