Greyboy to hit Hesham's

Andreas Stevens, better known as San Diego DJ-producer-record label honcho Greyboy, makes a return voyage to our fair shores this weekend to perform at Hesham's Studio on King Street.

Inspired more than a decade ago by Britain's burgeoning acid-jazz scene, the 32-year-old DJ became the prime architect of the stateside rare-groove movement, which revived soul, jazz and funk breaks of decades past by melding them with rugged hip-hop rhythms.

With his latest endeavor, "Mastered the Art," Greyboy graduates from jazzy breakbeats to a sophisticated sound culled from bits and pieces of obscure easy-listening platters and a personal treasury of head-bobbing beats.

True to his funky retro roots, Greyboy is said to travel in a gold 1970 Ford Torino GT with an original 8-track player for classic old-school effect.

>> Place: Hesham's Studio, 186 N. King St.
>> Time: 9 p.m. today
>> Admission: $10 to $12 at the door

Free Comic Book Day

So you never get anything free? Well, tomorrow's your lucky day. To celebrate today's release of the "Spider-Man" movie, national mainstream and independent comic book publishers are offering comic books free, gratis, por nada through specialty stores and public libraries nationwide tomorrow.

The four main titles being offered are reprints of the first issues of "Ultimate Spider-Man" (Marvel) and "Justice League Adventures" (DC), a special "Star Wars Tales" from Dark Horse with a story that ties in to the upcoming movie and an Image origin issue of video game heroine "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider."

(Local libraries in McCully-Moiliili and Waikiki-Kapahulu will offer a TokyoPop sampler instead of the "Tomb Raider" title.)

The two libraries and three of the four officially-sanctioned comic book stores will give away the main titles on a first-come, first-served basis, with other publisher titles also available.

Gecko Books in Kaimuki and Kailua will put together "goodie bags" tailored to both occasional and frequent customers that will include promotional postcards and flyers, plus select back issues of other popular titles.

The Kaimuki store (3613 Waialae Ave.) will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the Kailua store (1247-G Kailua Road), from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Call either 732-1292 or 263-2004 for more information.

Here are the other stores and their operating hours tomorrow:

>> Blue Moos in Pearl City, 803 Kamehameha Highway, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Call 454-1329.
>> Collector Maniacs in Kaimuki, 3571 Waialae Ave., 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Call 739-3912.
