Secrets to Success

BY JOHN-PAUL MICEK

Easy and effective
goal setting

The majority of business professionals know they must set goals. Yet many are not sure how to start the process and stay on track. Here are four foundational principles for a goal setting and planning process that will be effective, successful and fun.

Business leaders relentlessly set larger and greater goals. These leaders love the goal-setting process because they understand how crucial the following four principles are to successful goal achievement.

>> Principle No. 1: Develop a positive outlook toward change.

The most dangerous barrier to goal achievement is the wrong attitude toward change. Many people get tricked into thinking, "Why plan? Something always happens that changes my plans anyway."

To illustrate how destructive this thinking is to reaching your goals, I pose a question. How confident would you feel boarding a plane if you heard the captain say, "I was in a rush this morning and did not have time to lay out a flight plan. Don't worry though, the weather looks pretty good out my window now. We're hoping to end up in San Diego so let's see how we do."

You would exit that plane so fast the boarding ramp would be smoking! Your life and business should not be treated any differently than if you were responsible for a plane full of passengers trusting you to bring them to the right destination.

>> Principle No. 2: Become a treasure hunter.

Treasure hunters know valuable jems are never dropped into their lap; instead they dig to uncover hidden jewels. You must unearth the natural talents and skills that you already possess. Be careful though, your talents may not always look like treasures. But rough diamonds look like dirty rocks until they are cut and polished.

It is the same way with our natural abilities. You have to work at polishing them. That takes some work, but the gem you will have when you're finished is well worth the effort.

>> Principle No. 3: Understand your behavioral strengths.

This will give you an important edge. Focus on the way you communicate and the values that are most important to you. Then you'll know where to focus your energy for exponential results. The most successful people in the world put their major energy and focus into their natural strengths.

>> Principle No. 4: Define your passion and your niche

Once you determine your natural skills and behavioral strengths, the next step is to match them with your passion and define your niche. Developing goals in a niche you are passionate about and putting your natural strengths to work will catapult you to higher levels of success.

Once you clearly understand these four principles, you will understand the foundation to successfully reach more goals in the next 12-months than you have in the past seven years. If you would like the unabridged article on these four principles, complete with coaching tips on how to start reaching twice as many goals in one-third the time, send me an e-mail and I'll forward you the 1400 word article.
