Amosa takes over Aiea
boys basketball program


Amosa Amosa has been selected as the new varsity boys basketball coach at Aiea High School.

Amosa takes over for Rodney Cavaco, who stepped down after 23 years at the helm of Na Alii.

Amosa will be a teacher at Aiea next year and is also the offensive coordinator for the Aiea football team. He was an All-Western Athletic Conference offensive lineman for the University of Hawaii in 1987-88.

Starbucks Ka'iwi Channel Relay set

Some 200 of the top male and female paddlers from Hawaii, Australia, Tahiti, Canada and the mainland U.S. will compete this Sunday in the 13th Starbucks Ka'iwi Channel Relay World Championship.

The 40.2-mile course for the one-person (OC-1) and two-person (OC-2) relay is from the waters off the Kaluakoi Hotel to the entrance of the Ala Wai Harbor off Magic Island.

The staggered race start begins with the open women's OC-1 division at 8 a.m., followed by an 8:30 a.m. for OC-1 mixed open and senior masters men, and OC-2 open women.

The OC-1 masters and open men, and the OC-2 open mixed and open men divisions get under way at 9 a.m.

The first finishers are expected around 1:30 p.m. For the first time, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hawaii for their new waterman-waterwomen program.

The defending champions are Mike Judd and John Foti in OC-1 men and Darcy Wilcox and Katie Curtis in OC-1 women.

Hawaii sends 24 to water polo play

Two dozen young Hawaii athletes in grades 5-12 have been selected to play on USA Water Polo northwest zone teams next month.

Chosen for the women's competition in Salt Lake City, May 24-27, are: Punahou sophomore Kamaili Crowell, Iolani junior Gabriella Knight, and Punahou senior Katie Flanagan.

Ben Nary of Chaminade is the coach of the youth boys team that will compete at Stanford, Calif., May 24-27.

Mike Kokehne of Pac-Five will head the cadet boys team at the May 24-27 event at Pomona, Calif.

Going to the USA development competition in Annapolis, Md., are 5th graders Kirby Ai (home schooled) and Epiphany's Mark Fasi Allison; Epiphany 6th grader Kellen Chong, and Punahou 7th grader Jack Smart.

HLF surf series starts this weekend

The Hawaiian South Shore Open will kick-off this summer's Steinlager Series, a total of four professional and amateur longboard surfing events.

The Hawaiian South Shore Open will feature more than 175 competitors in 12 divisions, including the $2,000 Steinlager Pro division. Regular professional competitors include former World Longboard Champions Rusty Keaulana, Bonga Perkins and Dino Miranda.

The event will take place at Kuhio Beach, May 4 - 5 behind the Duke Kahanamoku statue in Waikiki.

The Hawaiian South Shore Open is the first event of a four event series, concluding with the Aston Hotels Surf Classic at Kuhio Beach Sept. 14-15.
