Mililani fifth-grader takes second in chess contest
Mililani resident Robert Lau won second place at the National Elementary School Chess Championships held over the weekend in Portland, Ore.A total of 413 youths from kindergarten through fifth grade participated. The fifth-grader also placed first among 165 chess players from kindergarten through sixth grade in the Blitz competition, in which each player has five minutes to compete.
Last month, Lau tied for first place with four other players in the Booster Section of the 2002 National Open Chess Championships held in Las Vegas. Both children and adults participated in the competition.
Overnight Mililani relay to aid cancer fight
The American Cancer Society will hold the "Mililani Relay for Life" at the Mililani District Park May 18-19 from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. to help fight cancer.Chairman Hilary Kelly is inviting organizations to sign up a team of 10 or more for a noncompetitive overnight event in which team members take turns running or walking around a track.
Every person pledges to raise $100. Cancer control programs, research groups and direct services to cancer patients and their families will benefit from the funds raised at the relay.
The program includes a candlelight ceremony for those who died from cancer and to honor those who continue to fight the illness. "Healing Touch" massages, beauty services, food booths, games, crafts, bon dancing and entertainment from Horizon, Na Oiwi and Kekala will take place up to 10 p.m.

Part of Hawaii Belt Road closed due to heavy rain
NAALEHU, Hawaii >> Heavy rain forced the closure yesterday afternoon of the Hawaii Belt Road in Kau between Naalehu and Pahala for about 4 1/2 hours, Hawaii County Civil Defense said.One lane of traffic was reopened at about 4:30 p.m., and both lanes were expected to be open later in the evening, police said.
UH strategic plan to be unveiled at Lei Day lunch
A draft of the new University of Hawaii-Manoa strategic plan will be unveiled tomorrow at a lunchtime Lei Day celebration on the Bachman Hall lawn.The plan was developed from ideas collected from the Listening Project, electronic bulletin boards, open forums, working groups, the steering committee and a planning workshop in February with 1,400 participants.
Free hamburgers and hot dogs will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Jon Osorio, UH-Manoa Hawaiian studies professor and local entertainer.
"This event is an opportunity to celebrate the work and dedication of so many people who have stepped forward to plan and improve our university," said Karl Kim, UH-Manoa interim vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Kamehameha program encourages preschool
Kamehameha Schools has begun a new scholarship program, called "Pauahi Keiki Scholars," to encourage native Hawaiian parents to enroll their children in preschool.The program will utilize qualified nonprofit, tax-exempt schools not administered by Kamehameha Schools. In the future, the program will partner with Good Beginnings and other early-education organizations to expand its reach.

>> Read Aloud America has received a $5,000 grant from the G.N. Wilcox Trust to conduct its Read Aloud Program at a public school this year. The program is a literacy project to promote reading among families after school. Since it began in 1999, it has served more than 35,000 through 16 programs, held twice monthly for one semester.>> The Hawaii Foodbank has received $20,000 from the Robert F. Lange Foundation and $15,000 from the Hawaii Justice Foundation to continue feeding the hungry. The Philip Morris Cos. Maui girl, 7, dies after weekend beach accident
The seven-year-old Maui girl who was critically injured in a freak accident at a beach in Hana over the weekend died yesterday at Kapiolani Medical Center.Zaney Ann Kalama-Baker was pronounced dead at 12:05 p.m. Maui fire officials said Kalama-Baker and her siblings were playing at Hamoa Beach Park Saturday when a tunnel the children had dug in the sand collapsed burying the girl.
When relatives dug Kalama-Baker out of the sand she was not breathing. She was later resuscitated then flown to Kapiolani Medical Center.
Hilo's Waiakea Villas heavily damaged by fire
HILO >> Fire destroyed the administration building and lobby of Waiakea Villas at 1:40 a.m. today, police said.The all-wood, low-rise former hotel, converted to apartments, business offices, and restaurants, consists of several buildings arranged in a "village."
An undetermined number of residents were evacuated from buildings closest to the administration unit as a precaution, police said.
No one was injured and no additional buildings were damaged by fire, they said.
No damage estimate was available this morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Missing Kona woman, 54, found OK in Honolulu
KAILUA-KONA >> Police have located a South Kona woman who was thought to be missing in Honolulu. Penelope Medeiros, 54, was located in Honolulu in good health, they said. Police did not say when she was found.HONOLULU
Kapalama woman held in attack on ex-husband
A 43-year-old Kapalama woman was arrested for criminal property damage, reckless endangering, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and abuse of a household member in an alleged attack on her ex-husband last night.Police said the woman saw her ex-husband, 42, driving his pickup truck with his 21-year-old girlfriend in the Salt Lake area about 8:45 p.m.
The man told police his ex-wife rammed his truck with her van several times in traffic between Salt Lake and Kalihi. At 9:04 p.m., police said an officer saw the van cut off the pickup truck at the corner of North School Street and Gulick Avenue. The officer arrested the woman after he saw her step out of the van and assault the man still seated in the pickup truck.

Gas-station argument results in man's arrest
An argument at an Aiea gas station resumed last night, resulting in the arrest of a 43-year-old Aiea man for reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, refusing to stop and terroristic threatening.Police said the man got into an argument with a 26-year-old Aiea man at the gas station near the Pearlridge Center about 10:15 p.m. The younger man told police he and the suspect had gotten into an argument at the gas station Friday. Police said the suspect threatened the younger man by driving his car toward him, then slammed on his brakes.
The man hit a light post and a tree, then fled, police said. Officers stopped him a block away.
