Preview

The following is a preview of movies opening this weekend:

>> "Deuces Wild" -- For some reason, this '50s-era drama produced by Martin Scorsese hasn't been released since it was made two years ago. A new breed of wise guys, the Vipers, is threatening to take control of Brooklyn's rough streets, but the Deuces gang isn't backing down from them. It stars Stephen Dorff, Brad Renfro, Joshua Leonard and James Franco (who's also in "Spider-Man") (R).

>> "Hollywood Ending" -- Woody Allen's latest project has him playing a once-famous film director who gets a chance to make a big-budget picture, thanks to the influence of his ex-wife (Téa Leoni), who's dating a frugal studio executive. This promises to be a broad comedy, as Allen's character goes blind with anxiety and ends up directing the film sightless (PG-13).

>> "Spider-Man" -- Tobey Maguire stars in the comic-book superhero's $100 million big-screen debut. (PG-13).

Here's da scoops

Hot out there, isn't it? Ice cream sure would be nice.

Tomorrow night, Baskin-Robbins stores are handing out free scoops of ice cream, in any flavor, to anyone who stops by between 6 and 10 p.m.

Nationwide, the chain expects to give away 200 scoops per second on Free Scoop Night.

The catch? There doesn't seem to be one. It's just a way to say thanks for the patronage, the company says.

On top of that, for every cone given away, Baskin-Robbins will make a donation to First Book, a nonprofit group with the mission of giving children from needy families the chance to own new books. Last year, First Book put 7 million tomes in the hands of kids nationwide.

Free treats for charity was also the idea behind Jamba Juice's Free Smoothie Morning, held April 17 on Oahu and April 19 on Maui. The lure of free drinks was used to draw customers to the stores, where they could make donations to the American Cancer Society of Hawaii.

Jamba Juice says $11,730 was collected on both islands, topping the company's goal of $10,000 in donations. A total of 10,626 smoothies were given away at the 10 Hawaii stores.

Nationally, the chain says, its 276 stores gave away 201,500 24-ounce smoothies -- worth about $725,000. A national total of $166,000 was raised for local cancer society chapters.

If you're doing the math, Hawaii residents donated about $1.10 for each smoothie slurped. The national average was about 82 cents.

May Day overnighter

If you're planning to see the Brothers Cazimero May Day concert tomorrow night at the Waikiki Shell and want to avoid traffic, you might consider an overnighter in Waikiki.

The Waikiki Beach Marriott is one step ahead of you. The resort is offering a one-night kamaaina package that includes a free room upgrade to a partial ocean view, complimentary parking, two tickets to the concert, one Bros Caz CD and two picnic dinners from Kuhio Beach Grill, at one price of $149.

Two tickets to the 7:30 p.m. concert alone would cost you $30 to $47.

An alternate package with tickets, CD and two picnic dinners -- that is, everything but the room -- is available for $59.

For Marriott reservations, call 922-6611. For concert information, call 526-4400.
