Boy's Day essay contest

Families with three, four or even five generations of sons, fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers are welcome to enter the "Multiple Generations of the Year Awards."

The winners' ceremony will be a highlight of the Boy's Day Festival taking place Sunday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.

Nomination forms must be submitted along with a one-page essay titled, "Multiple Generations: Living a Legacy," which mentions a family tradition and includes a family snapshot.

More than $1,500 in prizes will be given to winners. The deadline for submissions is 3 p.m. Friday. Mail or deliver nominations to: Multiple Generations Award, Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, 2454 S. Beretania St. Honolulu, 96826. Call 224-5735 for nominaton forms.

Sunday is for sons

Hilo celebrates Boy's Day with a children's festival, "Kodomo no Matsuri," 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.

Several kenjikai -- regional organizations representing the Japanese prefectures that were the original homes of Hawaii's Japanese residents-- are helping the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii organize the event

Children's activities from traditional Japanese arts and crafts to kitemaking will be offered.

"We want this new festival to give our children an exciting, colorful, active, and enjoyable chance to learn more about the Japanese culture from their families and others in the community," said Roland Higashi, president of the Japanese Community Association. The association hopes to make the festival an annual event.
