Lei day in Lahaina

The Hawaiian symbol of aloha will be featured in all its fragrant glory at Lahaina Cannery Mall's Lei Day celebration 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The festivities include a lei-making contest showcasing handmade creations by Valley Isle lei makers, entertainment by the Lahaina Senior Citizens Group and Lokomaikai, and the nostalgic sounds of the steel guitar by Maui's Henry Allen and Kiyoshi "Lion" Kobayashi from Japan.

The lei-making contest is open to the public, and contestants are asked to submit their creations by 11 a.m. Saturday. Entries will be judged in two categories, "Most Beautiful" and "Most Unusual," with three gift certificates valued at $50, $75 and $125 awarded in each category.

Lahaina Cannery Mall is located on the north end of Lahaina Town fronting Honoapiilani Highway and Front Street. Events are subject to change without notice.

Family fun on Kauai

The Hanalei Colony Resort offers a summer family program for guests staying from June 1 through Sept. 15, 2002.

Some activities are free, and others carry a nominal fee. For instance, guests can watch demonstrations of palm frond weaving for free and learn to make a flower or ti leaf lei for $8, which covers the cost of materials.

There's a "Keiki Kamp" for children ages 5 to 12 on selected days. The three-hour program costs $20 per child and includes Hawaiian crafts, hula and stories.

A supervised children's evening program, "Nanea," is scheduled two nights a week. Children can read stories, watch movies and enjoy a pizza dinner for $25 per child.

Summer rates start at $185 per night for a two-bedroom condominium unit. Stay six paid nights and the seventh night is free. Each unit features a full kitchen and private lanai, but do not have televisions, stereos or phones to promote relaxation without distraction.

For information or reservations, call toll free from Hawaii, the mainland and Canada at (800) 628-3004 or send e-mail to aloha@hcr.com.
