Benham, 81, was taken to the Queens intensive care unit and had lapsed into a coma at last report. According to televised reports, Benham suffered from a brain abscess.
Benham was a longtime teacher and coach at Kamehameha Schools and served as athletic director there before taking over as ILH executive secretary in 1970, the year five public schools broke away from the ILH to join the Oahu Interscholastic Association.
Benham was also an accomplished tennis player, winning a territorial championship.
