Yamaguchi, who grew up in Japan, visits Tsukiji Fish Market, Takashimaya Department Store and street stands that serve his childhood dishes -- Korean barbecues, ramen and grilled skewers.
In the end he sits down to a kaiseki dinner that highlights the freshest produce of the winter season.
"My Country My Kitchen," which premiered last week, takes chefs to their home countries in search of the foods that first inspired them.
'Fundango' to help kids
"Fundango," a benefit for the Kapiolani Children's Miracle Network, highlights Cinco de Mayo events at Compadres Bar & Grill in Ward Centre.Attire is "cowboy, denim, Texas tux or flamenco" for the fund-raiser, 5 to 8 p.m. May 8. Or if that's too flamboyant for you, aloha attire is OK, too. Tickets are $60, including two drinks and pupus, plus a silent auction.
Proceeds go to the Child-At-Risk Evaluation Program, which provides medical care for children entering foster care, and identifies cases of abuse and neglect. The Fundango raised $27,000 last year. Call 535-7121.
Other Cinco de Mayo events at Compadres:
Wednesday: Past Compadres employees are invited to a reunion party, 5 to 7 p.m. There's a prize for the oldest Compadres aloha or T-shirt.
Friday: Managers Party, 4 to 7 p.m. features $2 margaritas and mai tais and grilled oysters.
Saturday: Pre-Cinco party, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., with Hawaiian music and half-price pupus.
Next Sunday: Cinco de Mayo party, 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Compadres Party Zone (the former A Pacific Cafe), with DJ Rocky Dunmire. The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. with free meals for children, with purchase of an adult entrée.

Chilean wines the topic
Robert Mondavi's Chilean wines will be featured at a five-course dinner, 6 to 9 p.m. May 6 at Sam Choy's Diamond Head. Greg Imbach, dubbed the "Mad Professor of Education" for Mondavi will discuss the featured wines. The 1999 Sena will make its Hawaii debut in a vertical tasting with the 1998 vintage, served with a mixed grill of lamb, beef and venison sausage.The rest of the menu: Crispy Shellfish Roll (with Errazuriz Fume Blanc 1999), Pan-Seared Moi Fillet (Errazuriz Chardonnay 1999), Tropical Duck Confit Salad (Caliterra "Arboleda" Merlot 1998) and dessert (Errazuriz "Late Harvest" Sauvignon Blanc 1999). KCC graduate Jason Kiyota is organizing a culinary tour of Thailand this summer and is working to keep the cost down through fund-raisers such as a brunch for moms and those who love them.
Cost is $30 for a buffet that includes roast suckling pig, pressed almond duck and a teppan-yaki station. Seatings are at 10 a.m. and noon. Call 734-9499.
The Thailand tour is set for May 14 to May 29 and will include the city of Ahutthaya, the Damonsaduak Floating Market, Chiang Mai, Phi Phi island and more. It is open to the public, but with only 20 slots available, preference will go to culinary students.
But back to Mother's Day -- it's two weeks from today, May 12, and it's not too early to make a reservation. Restaurants book up early for this special day, so if you don't want to end up cooking yourself, better get on the phone.
Duke's Waikiki: Breakfast buffet, 7 to 11 a.m.; brunch buffet, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Cost is $9.95 until 10:30 a.m.; $10.50 after that. Call 922-2268.
