Over the past decade, Kalaheo hasn't often been out of the running for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division championship. Kalaheo closes with win
By Tim Crouse
tcrouse@starbulletin.comThe Mustangs entered last night's regular-season finale against Kalani with no chance of winning the title -- but their impressive play on the court in a 61-44 home victory should put the rest of the league on alert that the Mustangs are not ready to give up their hold on the OIA crown.
McKinley beat Moanalua 40-25 to win the East for the first time since 1997, and the Mustangs finished second. Kalani and Moanalua round out the top four spots in the division.
Kalaheo dominated the offensive boards and never let Kalani get into a rhythm last night. The Mustangs got second-chance opportunities on 14 possessions during the game, pulling down 13 offensive boards, converting for points 13 times.
"We were out of position," Kalani coach Mike Zane said. "It wasn't necessarily the height, because we played with the big girls at McKinley (in a win on Tuesday) and did a pretty good job blocking out and not allowing the putbacks."
Said Kalaheo senior Brina Fritzsche, "We're supposed to put it away the first time, but we all crashed the boards on the offensive and defensive end, and got lucky to get so many offensive rebounds."
Kalani dictated the tempo for most of the game, with a fast-paced offensive style, but the Falcons continually hurt themselves with turnovers.
Kalani started the game with two consecutive turnovers, Kalaheo jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a pair of Fritzsche buckets and the Mustangs never looked back.
The Falcons finished with 20 turnovers.
Fritzsche, playing her final home game, had 13 points and four blocked shots. Latoya Wily led Kalaheo with 17 points.
"I was determined to not end on a bad note," Fritzsche said. "We were in a slump for a while but Kalani is a good team and now that we've played them and beat them, we're very excited."
Ashley Takata scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the first half to keep Kalani close enough to trail 31-24 at the half.
But Wily started a 17-5 Kalaheo run early in the third quarter with an offensive rebound and a conventional three-point play. Carson closed it by hitting her second trey to put the Mustangs up 48-32. Wily scored off another offensive rebound with six minutes left to give Kalaheo its biggest lead of the game, 52-34.
