Hawaii tennis teams
call it a season

The Hawaii tennis teams were ousted from the Western Athletic Conference tournament in the first round at Tulsa, Okla., yesterday, with the men losing to Rice 4-2 and the women losing to San Jose State by the same score.

The Warriors started out a point behind when the Owls steamrolled their doubles teams. Justin Manolascino and Francisco Brignole were able to pick up a pair of points for UH with wins in the singles matches, but they were canceled out when Rice took the Nos. 1, 3 and 5 singles.

Stacy Hakikawa and Justine Boutet won their singles matches in straight sets for the Wahine. Kimberly Curtis and Birgitte Brubakken took their opponents to three sets before losing.

The Warriors finished the season 16-11 and the Wahine closed out the year 6-17.

Wahine knocked out of MPSF water polo tourney

The Hawaii women's water polo team fell out of contention on the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships at Los Angeles yesterday, beating UC Santa Barbara 6-4 before being blown out 14-4 by Stanford.

Erin Kocher scored three goals for the Wahine.

Nelson takes Maui Tour with sudden-death eagle

Kirk Nelson of Makena Golf Course eagled the first hole of sudden death to beat Eddie Lee for the Maui Tour Championship at Kaanapali's South Course yesterday.

Nelson and Lee, who represents Wailea Golf Course, tied at 70 after 18 holes. Brian Sasada of Makena Golf Course and Guy Hashiro of Waeihu tied for third with 71s.

Vulcans split in first round of softball tourney

The Hawaii-Hilo softball team won one and lost one on the first day of the Mountain Dew Softball Classic yesterday, pounding Cal State San Bernardino 9-1 before getting shut out by Cal State Bakersfield 4-0.

Kristine Kahoalii, who gave up seven runs to San Bernardino in a loss earlier this year, limited the Coyotes to three hits.

Hawaii sailors qualify for North American regatta

UH's coed sailing team took second in the district championship today at Keehi Lagoon.

The performance qualified Hawaii for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's North American Championships on May 29, on the same course.

UC Santa Barbara won and also qualified.
