A man on parole for burglary in a 1994 home invasion in which an elderly Honolulu woman was brutally murdered has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly breaking into an Enchanted Lake home and threatening people with a shotgun last Saturday.

Harry Kauhi served five years of a 10-year prison term and was paroled in March 2001 for burglary and firearms convictions in connection with the death of Ellen Lum. The 74-year-old grandmother was fatally beaten Nov. 14, 1994, at her Rycroft Street home by burglars who mistook her for the mother of a man they believed had crystal methamphetamine.

Kauhi was on a side street serving as a lookout when Lum was beaten, said Lum's son Vincent. Last weekend's alleged break-in "has nothing to do with us," he said.

Kauhi's brother, Samson Kauhi, was sentenced to 15 years in prison last year for the second-degree murder of Lum.

In connection with the incident at the Enchanted Lake home, Harry Kauhi, 48, is charged with attempted murder, robbery, kidnapping, burglary, terroristic threatening and three firearm offenses

Police said Kauhi knocked on the front door of a home on Keolu Drive and pointed a shotgun at the 22-year-old man who answered the door.

Kauhi struck the man in the head twice with the shotgun and was leading him at gunpoint to the rear of the residence when the man's father and a woman intervened, police said.

During a struggle, police said Kauhi pointed the shotgun at the man's stomach and pulled the trigger but the weapon did not fire. Police later examined the shotgun and found that it was loaded and operational, but the firing chamber was empty, police said.

Kauhi remains in custody in lieu of $75,000 bail.
