‘One Life to Live’ films 2
storylines on Maui

ABC's daytime drama "One Life to Live" will film five episodes over 10 days on Maui to air during May sweeps.

The majority of the filming will be along Maui's upper west shores, from Kaanapali to Honolua Bay, including the Regency Maui Resort & Spa where the cast and production will be based. Other locations to be filmed include Windward Maui's Baldwin and Paia beaches.

There will be two storylines: One involves a couple in a remote location with lots of footage shot at Honolua Bay. The other story features a couple, who are visiting the Regency Maui Resort & Spa, trying to locate the other couple.

According to Maui Visitors Bureau officials, the advertising value to Maui County of the five shows being filmed on the island is worth about $1.5 million. Each episode is worth about $309,000, while the promotional value of a trip being given away to promote the episodes is another $300,000, said Charlene Kauhane of the Maui Visitors Bureau. The trip sweepstakes will be broadcast on ABC and SoapNet.

Maui Film Commissioner Amy Kasten made the pitch to ABC execs in New York during a business trip to the city in January. Kauhane and MVB director Marsha Wienert made a follow-up visit in February.

"ABC wanted to add a hip quotient to the show for sweeps and Maui is very, very hip," Kasten said.

The daytime drama rarely films on locations. Since 1997, the soap has never filmed outside New York City. The show's director, producer and location manager visited Maui in April to scout locations.

In exchange for filming at the Hyatt, the production will receive about 30 complimentary hotel rooms during the filming.

IN OTHER MAUI production news, the May sweeps two-hour promotional special for "America's Funniest Home Videos" will use Maui as the show's theme, including hula dancers and science footage of the island, though the show will be filmed in Los Angeles.
