Tanuvasa works out
for Rams

Recent alumni aren't the only former Hawaii football players looking for pro opportunities. Nine-year NFL veteran defensive lineman Ma'a Tanuvasa worked out and took a physical for the St. Louis Rams yesterday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Tanuvasa, a Mililani High graduate who missed only one game for the Denver Broncos from 1996-2000, spent last year with the San Diego Chargers. But he was injured for most of the season, and ended the year on the disabled list.

Tanuvasa was drafted by the Rams in 1993 after helping UH to the 1992 Western Athletic Conference championship.

Four UH players from last year's senior class were close to being invited to pro camps as of late yesterday.

Defensive linemen Joe Correia and Mike Iosua, receiver Craig Stutzmann and safety Rob Grant were all on the verge of linking up with CFL teams. But UH coach June Jones emphasized nothing was finalized yet.

Also, Correia will likely be invited to a San Francisco 49ers tryout camp this weekend, Jones said.

If Correia doesn't stick with the 49ers, he might get a tryout with British Columbia, along with Stutzmann and Iosua. Grant will probably go to Edmonton.

Also, Kamehameha graduate Steven Grace, an offensive lineman who played at Arizona, has signed a free-agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

Wahine finish last at WAC golf tournament

Hawaii finished last yesterday at the seven-team Western Athletic Conference women's golf championship in Sparks, Nev.

The Wahine carded a 956, well behind the winning pace of No. 3 Tulsa (881). Sophomore Rene Krause shot a three-round 234 to finish at 234, tied for 19th. Tulsa's Stacy Prammanasudh won with a 211.

Wahine softball team heads east for series

The Hawaii softball team tries to keep its postseason hopes alive with Western Athletic Conference doubleheaders at Portland State Saturday and Sunday.

The Wahine (30-20, 11-5) are two games behind conference leader Fresno State (41-14, 12-2). The Vikings (17-26, 6-8) trail in the series with Hawaii, 6-3.

The Wahine finish out their regular-season road schedule with a nonconference doubleheader at Oregon on April 30. Hawaii concludes its regular season at home with doubleheaders against Tulsa May 10-11.
