Warriors top Buffanblu

Kamehameha avenged three earlier losses to Punahou and created a tie atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball standings with a 47-40 victory last night at Kekuhaupio Gym.

The loss was Punahou's first in league play, and both teams are now 11-1 with two games remaining on the regular season schedule. If the Warriors and Buffanblu are still tied after the regular season, they'll meet for the ILH title next week.

Kamehameha lost to Punahou twice during the preseason and again in their first ILH meeting on April 4 as the Buffanblu cruised to a 58-36 victory at home.

"Our focus on defense was a little bit better this time," Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said. "We defined our defensive goals a lot better."

The Warriors' primary goal was to keep Punahou guard Rachel Kane and center Becky Hogue under control.

Lehua Wood, who missed the first meeting with an injury, drew the assignment of sticking with Kane and limited her to eight points on 2 of 9 shooting from the field.

"Rachel is probably the best player in the league right now, maybe the state, and we had to do a decent job against her," Cockett said. "Lehua doesn't score a lot for us, but she makes up for it with her defense."

Ashley Ruff fronted Hogue most of the night despite giving up about four inches to the 6-footer and held her to 10 points, five below her average.

"I just tried to stay in front and box her out and keep her off the boards," Ruff said.

The Warriors got their offensive punch from Megan Ching. The junior swingman helped Kamehameha jump out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter with four points and three assists.

Ching and Ruff spent most of the second quarter on the bench after they both picked up their second foul and watched Punahou go on a 14-3 run to take a 23-20 lead. Kamehameha rallied back to take a 24-23 lead into halftime.

The Warriors took control again in the third period as Ching scored seven of her game-high 15 points and Ruff hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Kamehameha a 38-30 lead.

"(Ching is) almost like a virus," Ruff said. "When she's on, everything spreads to everyone else. Everyone gets pumped and we feed off of her."

Punahou made a final run at the Warriors, closing the gap to 40-38 with 1:42 left in the game. But Kamehameha made four of six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

"Kamehameha played tough, they executed when they needed to," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said. "We made some stops on defense, but we just couldn't finish on the other end. We had our chances."

It was a doubly good night for the Warriors as the Kamehameha Division II team beat Punahou, 53-33, to improve to 11-0 and clinch the division championship.
