Pipeline break sends sewage to Kaneohe Bay

A broken 8-inch sewer line spilled raw sewage into an adjacent storm drain, causing 90 gallons to reach Kaneohe Bay on Monday night before the flow was stopped.

The total spill is estimated at 350 gallons, although only about a fourth of the sewage entered the bay via a storm drain.

Damage to a clay sewer pipe at 44-006 Hulakai Place was reported at 6:25 p.m.

City crews are repairing the pipe after cleaning and disinfecting the area. Warning signs have been posted along the affected portion of the bay, and the state Department of Health has been notified.

Heart attack, not crash, killed Big Island driver

Results of an autopsy show that a 67-year-old man who died Friday after a traffic accident in North Kona actually suffered a fatal heart attack.

Police said the victim, William H. Myers, was involved in a one-car traffic accident on Kamehameha III Road in Keauhou.

Based on the autopsy results, police said Myers' death will not be counted as a traffic fatality.

The fatality count on the Big Island so far this year remains at 14, compared with 10 at the same time last year.

Man tries to evade police after call alleging abuse

Big Island police have charged a 25-year-old Kailua-Kona man with a number of offenses after he allegedly tried to escape from officers during a domestic abuse case Saturday.

Police charged Rihari Monte Ohia with two counts of abuse of a household member, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, one count of first-degree attempted assault, criminal property damage, criminal contempt of court, drunken driving and a number of other traffic offenses.

Ohia allegedly led police on a chase after officers responded to a domestic-abuse call late Saturday in the Kamani Trees subdivision.

Police said that when Kona patrol officers arrived, they confronted Ohia, who was attempting to leave the scene in his vehicle, a 1979 El Camino.

Police said that while driving away, Ohia intentionally sideswiped a responding officer's vehicle and fled the scene.

Police spotted Ohia's vehicle minutes later on Alii Drive, where he crashed his car while attempting to evade them.

Ohia then got out of his car and fled on foot, police said. After a short chase, police apprehended the suspect and arrested him.

Ohia is being held in lieu of $8,425 bail.
