The following is a preview of movies opening this weekend: Preview
"The Cat's Meow" and "Y Tu Mamá También" -- Two of the highlight films from the current HIFF Spring Festival go into regular theatrical runs starting this weekend.
>> "The Cat's Meow" is director Peter Bogdanovich's look at a fateful party held aboard William Randolph Hearst's private yacht in November 1924 that resulted in a mysterious and unsolved killing. Edward Herrmann and Kirsten Dunst are particularly good as Hearst and his mistress, actress Marion Davies.
>> "Y Tu Mamá También" is the sensational film by Mexican director Alfredo Cuarón about a fateful journey taken by a couple of horny teenage boys and an older Spanish woman through the natural and social landscape that is Mexico to a supposedly mythical beach. A thoroughly adult film, it's restricted to those 18 and over. "The Cat's Meow" is rated PG-13.
>> "Jason X" -- It wasn't enough that the terror of Crystal Lake, psycho killer-slash-hockey mask-wearing Jason Voorhees, made his reputation slaughtering dim-witted teenagers during his "Friday the 13th" run of slasher flicks. Now a professor and his students discover his cryogenically frozen body in the year 2455 while on a field trip to Earth. They take the murderous Popsicle back to their spaceship where he "accidentally" thaws out and ... oh, the horror!! (R).
>> "Life or Something Like It" -- Angelina Jolie as a girly-girl?! Believe it as she plays a superficial and blond (no comment) TV feature reporter in Seattle who runs into a homeless man (Tony Shalhoub) who tells her she has only a week to live. When his other predictions come true, she begins to re-examine her life and priorities -- which include rekindling a relationship with her cameraman (Edward Burns) with whom she has long been at odds (PG-13).
