DANCE TRADITIONS
The Phoenix Dance Chamber's
performances reflect Chinese culture

Ivy Hsu of the Phoenix Dance Chamber performed a traditional dance from China's Yunan province called "Dancing Among Bamboo," choreographed by Zhang Yong-Shan, during a Chinese dance concert held yesterday at McKinley Theater by the Hawaii Foundation for Chinese Culture and Arts. This year's concert, called "Passages," featured folk and classical dances reflecting China's history and culture.

From left, Angela Au, Malia Dong, Kiyomi Dong, Adrienne Chuck, Ivy Hsu and Peggy Leung of the Phoenix Dance Chamber performed a traditional dance from China's Hebei province called "Flying Kites" during a Chinese dance concert held yesterday at McKinley Theater by the Hawaii Foundation for Chinese Culture and Arts. The Phoenix Dance Chamber is part of the foundation. Founded in 1989, the company celebrates the diversity of Chinese dance by showcasing folk and classical works.

Peggy Leung of the Phoenix Dance Chamber performed a modern Chinese dance called "Spirit of the Brush," a piece about Chinese calligraphy. The company received the 1996 Best Modern Chinese Dance Choreography award and 1997 Best Chinese Folk Dance Award in North American dance competitions. Also in 1997, the troupe received the Hawaii State Dance Council's Cultural Preservation Award.
