Philippine presidentIt is part of a trip there to speak on religious persecution at the 2002 Fifth World Congress of the International Religious Liberty Association. Costs for the trip are being paid by the private sector, said the Republican legislator from Maunawili.
"I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to meet with Her Excellency," Pendleton said "As a Filipino, I am a personal admirer and look forward to our conversation."
While there, Pendleton, an attorney, pastor and former schoolteacher, also hopes to visit with Francis J. Ricciardone Jr., American ambassador to the Philippines.
Marumoto lauds president
State Rep. Barbara Marumoto (R, Waialae Iki), a member of the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, lauded President Bush's appointments of 60 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to government departments and commissions."I understand this is the largest number of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders any president has appointed," Marumoto said.
Three of those appointees are from Hawaii. They are Ed Kubo Jr., U.S. attorney; Michael Liu, assistant secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development; and Marumoto. Also, Lorraine Shin has been appointed as director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Rural Development in Hilo.
Women's Caucus event
The Hawaii Women's Political Caucus will hold a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Plaza Club at Pioneer Plaza in downtown Honolulu.State Sen. Colleen Hanabusa (D, Waianae-Maili-Makaha) will keynote the event, speaking about the importance of voting and the impact of women in elected public offices.
