Etheridge, who has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, has been a strong symbol of gay acceptance and pride since she announced her sexual orientation at the presidential inauguration gala in 1993. In April of last year, she performed before 45,000 fans at RFK stadium in Washington, D.C., as part of the Human Rights Campaign's "Equality Rocks," an event she helped organize.
Etheridge is best known for hits such as "Bring Me Some Water," "I'm the Only One," "I Want to Come Over" and "Come to My Window."
The two-time Grammy Award winner's new album, "Skin," is about shedding old skin and moving into a new life. "Skin" is a musical odyssey, the closest Etheridge has come to a concept album with a beginning, middle and end.
In the spirit of the album, Etheridge has decided that her "live ... and alone" tour will be just that -- the first time she's performed solo since her formative years in the Southern California clubs.
The Hawaii concerts are expected to draw hundreds of Etheridge fans from around the world. MEIN -- the Melissa Etheridge Information Network -- is organizing a "Tropical Getaway Tour" to Hawaii July 16-21. The excursion includes the Honolulu concert, a luau and a night on the town in Waikiki with the singer after her Honolulu concert. Accommodations will be at the Queen Kapiolani or Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki. Cost is $795 per person, based on double occupancy, not including air fare.
Members of MEIN will have the opportunity to sign up for the vacation package before it is opened to the general public on May 1. Deadline to sign up is May 31. To join MEIN, call 415-575-6655.
