Artists in progress

Intuition can be an artist's best friend, and 13 artists in training proved the old adage well in a new exhibition at The Arts at Marks Garage.

"Out of a Box" is the result of a painting class at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, taught by painter Timothy Ojile, who prefers "facilitator" over "teacher."

The students had to rely on their intuition since they had no choice over the subject matters for their work. They drew their assignments from a box filled with ideas such as "solar light reflected on ocean," "self-portrait as animal," "burning tree," "hope" and "chair." Their paintings grew from those words scribbled on pieces of paper.

The exhibit, at 1159 Nuuanu Ave., is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays through May 4. Call 521-2903.
