Amanda Leopoldo's layup with five seconds left gave McKinley a 42-41 home victory over Kahuku and at least a share of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division girls basketball title last night. Tigers take East on
Leopoldo layupBy Jason Kaneshiro
jkaneshiro@starbulletin.comWith the win the Tigers improved to 8-0 in the division, two games ahead of the Red Raiders, who fell to 6-2 with two left to play.
"It's uplifting, our girls are young and they're growing up real fast," McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said.
McKinley forward Amber Lee entered the game as the division's leading scorer but was held to a quiet 10 points by the Kahuku defense. Junior guard Rayna Isaki drained all four of her 3-point shots to pick up the scoring slack with 13 points.
Victorino also credited forwards Tania Liufau and Leopoldo for giving the Tigers a boost in the post. Leopoldo scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds, while Liufau contributed four boards to complement Lee's nine.
"We've been noticing a lot of people are double- and triple-teaming Amber, so now we have to get more people in play," Victorino said. "Our guards have started to open it up and (Liufau and Leopoldo) are really helping us out."
Hot shooting from Isaki and fellow guard Chantal Yadao helped McKinley take a 25-15 lead early in the second half. But Kahuku stayed within striking distance thanks to inside scoring from Mereani Lewenilovo, who finished with a team-high 12 points, and Michelle Peters (nine points).
The Red Raiders made their move midway through the fourth quarter to turn a seven-point deficit at the four-minute mark into a 41-40 lead two minutes later on a Lewenilovo free throw.
After the Tigers missed a jumper, the Red Raiders bled 39 seconds off the clock before the Tigers fouled Kelci Naihe with 14 seconds left.
Naihe missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and Lee snagged the rebound to give the Tigers the ball under their basket with 11 seconds left.
After a timeout, the Tigers broke the Red Raiders' full-court pressure defense. Isaki worked the ball downcourt and found Leopoldo alone under the basket for the winning score.
"We told them to push the ball upcourt, they'll have to come get our guards, the forwards get to the block and somebody will be open," Victorino said. "We knew they were going to pick up Amber so Amanda would be open."
