Cougars’ McGown to
resign after season

Brigham Young coach Carl McGown has announced that he will resign at the end of this season.

McGown informed his team, the athletic director and his family that this is his last year of coaching.

McGown, 64, led the defending national champion Cougars to two national titles in three years. He said that the university is waiting until the season is over before looking for a successor.

Hawaii coach Mike Wilton has surfaced as one of the possible candidates to replace him. Wilton and McGown are close friends. The Warriors' coach was offered an assistant coaching position three years ago.

"I have no comment," Wilton said. "I know nothing about it. All I know is Carl quit. That's all that I know and all that I care to know. All I want to do right now is coach my team as long as I can. I'm the Warrior coach and that's what I want to be. I'm hopeful that there's others that feel that way, too."

Another name that has been mentioned for the position is Tom Peterson, a former BYU assistant and the head coach at New Mexico. Current BYU assistant Troy Tanner could also be a candidate.

"It's not my responsibility to put someone at the top of the list," McGown said. "I don't want anything to do with the selection process, because a whole bunch of the coaches to be considered are personal friends of mine."

Note: Hawaii has received a verbal commitment from Matt Motter. The 6-foot-5 outside hitter from La Costa Canyon High school in San Diego visited the university last week. Motter had narrowed his choices to UH and Pepperdine, but the trip last week convinced him Hawaii was the right school for him.

"It's kind of how I like to be," Motter said. "Everything is pretty relaxed. I like the weather. I like the place. I like the fans and the coaches are really nice."
