3 Maui residents get police certificates of merit

WAILUKU >> Three Maui residents were presented with certificates of merit yesterday for helping police capture a male juvenile who had fled with stolen items in Wailuku.

The Maui Police Commission recognized Kenneth Mendoza, Norman Martin Jr. and George W. Hookano for their help.

Police said that on Oct. 23, officers responded to a call describing suspicious activity at the top of Puuohala Road, where four people were seen tossing items over an irrigation ditch fence. Upon arriving at the scene, police arrested four male juveniles. But as an officer tried to pat down one suspect, he resisted, broke free and fled into the bushes.

Police said Martin used his truck to look for the suspect and cut off all escape routes, and he, Mendoza, and Hookano helped police pursue and capture the suspect, along with stolen items.

As a result of the capture, the stolen items were returned to two Virginia visitors.

Space station visible in Hawaii skies

The International Space Station will appear in Hawaii skies the next few nights during an unusual alignment of the moon and major planets, according to a NASA Web site.

The space station will rise in the northwest at about 7:46 p.m. tomorrow and climb toward the moon at the top of the sky. It will pass to the northeast of the moon, which will be just over half full, and descend toward the southeast before blinking out in the earth's shadow at 7:53 p.m.

Trailing down from the moon toward the west-northwest horizon will be the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury in a nearly straight line. Just after 7:52 p.m., the space station will join the lineup, but on the opposite side of the sky.

On Monday the space station will rise in the northwest at about 7:30 p.m. and cut right through the planetary lineup near Mars at 7:34 p.m.

For information about viewing from a specific locale, check out the site operated by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, which will show you the sky from your ZIP code: liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov/RealTime/JPass/20.

Corrections and clarifications

>> Manoa Valley District Park is experiencing parking woes from heavy activity. A headline for yesterday's "Kokua Line" on Page A2 incorrectly named a different park.

>> Kahala Mall's "It Takes Two Fashion Show" will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow. An item yesterday on page D1 said incorrectly that it would be held today.

Boy riding in stolen car dies after 4-car collision

A 13-year-old boy died yesterday in a four-car crash at the intersection of Anonui Street and Kunia Road.

Police said the boy was a rear-seat passenger in a car stopped at the intersection when it was rear-ended by another car traveling north on Kunia Road at 4:30 p.m. The impact caused a chain reaction involving two other vehicles stopped at the intersection.

The boy was taken to St. Francis Medical Center West, where he later died. The other occupants of the four vehicles, including a 32-year-old woman who was driving the car in which the boy was riding, received minor injuries. She was arrested for unauthorized control of a motor vehicle after police found the car was stolen.

Police recover car used in attempt to run over cop

Police have recovered the car they say was involved earlier this week in the attempted murder of a police officer in Wahiawa. Police found the 1986 Toyota hatchback parked on Kanikani Place in Whitmore Village just before midnight Wednesday following an anonymous phone call to police.

On Monday, police said, a solo bike officer followed the car down a dead-end street, when the driver turned the car around and headed straight for the officer, crashing into his motorcycle.

The 32-year-old officer was trapped under his motorcycle but suffered only minor injuries.

The officer said he was trying to stop the car for racing with another vehicle in Whitmore Village.

Homeless man's death has HPD seeking help

Honolulu police are asking for the public's help in investigating the beating death of a homeless man earlier this month at Ala Moana Beach Park. Park workers found the body of Gabriel "Bill" Chaney, 28, at about 9 a.m. on April 8.

Police said Chaney may have been drinking with other homeless people at the Ewa end of the park prior to his death. An autopsy revealed that head injuries and alcohol both contributed to Chaney's death.

Chaney, who police said was also known as Billy, Bill, and William Chanel, was identified as a native Alaskan. Police said Chaney was 5 feet 4 inches tall, 160 pounds, with a husky build, black hair, brown eyes and a mustache. He was last seen wearing a dark-blue, long-sleeve sweatshirt with sailboat print, black knee-length swim trunks and brown leather sandals.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Homicide Detective James Anderson at 529-3356 or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cell phone.

Police to seek answers from hospitalized woman

Police are waiting to speak to a 71-year-old Manoa woman to ask her what happened prior to her niece finding her lying face down on her living-room floor Tuesday.

Police said tests to determine whether the woman had been sexually assaulted were inconclusive. The woman was partially disrobed and unresponsive, and her locked apartment was in disarray when her 42-year-old niece found her Tuesday night.

She was taken to Queen's Medical Center where her condition has fluctuated from critical to fair. Police have classified the case as a burglary.
