Salisbury and Gaspar
earn top BYUH honors

Scott Salisbury and Petra Gaspar were named the Brigham Young-Hawaii athletes of the year on Tuesday.

Salisbury helped the Seasiders basketball team reach the NCAA II tournament, becoming only the second player in school history to average a double-double (14.2 points, 10.2 rebounds).

Gaspar has helped the women's tennis team to the No. 1 spot in the country. During her four years, BYUH is 126-1 in dual matches. She is 19-0 in singles this season.

Salisbury was named to the Verizon All-District VIII All-Academic second team. Gaspar is a three-time Pacific West Conference All-Academic honoree.

Sing Chow commits to Hawaii-Hilo

Star-Bulletin softball player of the year Leo Sing Chow of Kamehameha has signed a letter of intent with Hawaii-Hilo.

Sing Chow was 13-0 with a 0.24 ERA her senior year with Kamehameha and also hit .476.

"Leo dominated the high school season with pitching and (her) bat," Hilo coach Callen Perreira said.

"She had a 0.00 ERA and hit two home runs in the state tournament."

Leo's sister, Tanya, is a junior with the Vulcans.

Hilo pitcher Kristine Kahoalii, meanwhile, is the PacWest Player of the Week after going 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA in two conference games. The junior allowed just one earned run in 15 innings to improve her season record to 14-6.

The Vulcans (33-15) are ranked fourth in the NCAA West Region poll, behind PWC champion Western New Mexico, California-Davis and Cal State-San Bernardino.

Six teams will participate in the Regional Championship next month.
