Hornets outslug
Vulcans in CaliforniaHawaii-Hilo pounded out 13 hits yesterday, but it wasn't nearly enough as Sacramento State beat the Vulcans 13-8 in Sacramento, Calif.
Bobby Ciani and Mario Celillo combined for seven of the Hornets' 16 hits. Sacramento State improved to 15-19.
Keola Park blasted a grand slam for Hilo (9-35-1) in the seventh inning and Scott McLaughlin was 3-for-4.
The Vulcans continue their road trip tomorrow in Stockton, Calif., with the first of three games against Pacific.
UH Wahine sailors take seventh in regatta
The Hawaii Wahine sailing team finished seventh at the Dellenbaugh Women's Trophy in Bristol, R.I., over the weekend.All-Americans Molly O'Bryan and Sarah Hitchcock placed seventh in the A division, although they were disqualified from the second of 16 races. Renee DeCurtis and Melody Torres finished seventh in the B division.
St. Mary's won the regatta, followed by Old Dominion and Brown.
The Wahine are ranked fifth in the current issue of Sailing World magazine.
The next event for the Wahine is the PCIYRA Women's Championships in Long Beach, Calif., on Saturday and Sunday.
Mason leads Vulcans to 10th-place finish
The Hawaii-Hilo men's golf team finished 10th out of 13 teams at the George Buzzlini Sr./Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock, Calif.Hilo shot a 928, well behind the host and winner of the event, Cal State Stanislaus, which tallied an 869. Chico State, California-Davis, Western Washington and CSU-Monterey rounded out the top five.
Nick Mason led the Vulcans with a 13-over-par 229, good for 24th place. The freshman from Wahiawa had the second-highest number of pars in the tournament, with 36.
Ishida beats Kelsey for men's singles title
Martie Ishida captured the men's singles title Tuesday in the 76th Oahu Public Parks Tennis Championships.Ishida topped Brant Kelsey 7-6, 7-5 in the final match at Diamond Head Tennis Center.
