Governor discounts reported push for gambling

Gov. Ben Cayetano said yesterday he has not heard anything about a new push to legalize gambling to raise revenues to balance the state's budget and he does not think any such offers would be taken seriously despite the state's $300 million state revenue shortfall.

Rumors circulated at the Capitol on Monday that some lawmakers were exploring offers by private gambling interests to pay $100 million or more for an exclusive state gambling license.

House Speaker Calvin Say discounts any consideration of the gambling proposals, noting the Judiciary Committee rejected them earlier in the session.

Sun International Hotels reportedly offered the state $300 million for an exclusive license to operate a casino at a proposed $1 billion resort in West Oahu.

Marian Ilitch, part-owner of Detroit MotorCity Casino and the Detroit Lions football team, has offered $100 million for a license to run two casinos on Oahu.

Corrections and clarifications

>> A Big Island man was arrested March 15 and arraigned last month for growing marijuana in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, not Friday as reported on Saturday's Page A4.

>> Olga Young, a Maui County planning department clerk, said, "I'm very upset. I definitely got sick," regarding a county building that had a bad-air problem. In a displayed quote on Page A14 Sunday, that quote was incorrectly attributed to clerk Carolyn Takayama. Takayama actually said that she has no problems with how the county took care of the situation.
