Rumor of ex-Sen. Fong’s
death greatly exaggerated

WHILE I don't do crossword puzzles, a friend who does pointed out a clue in the Crossword of the Pacific puzzle, which appears in this space, that just might draw a cross word from former Sen. Hiram Fong. Looking for "HIRAM," the clue was "Late Senator Fong." While the venerable ex-Senator may be late for breakfast, at last check he was still very much alive ... Then there's the local Italian fellow whose actual name is Michael Corleone, just like in "The Godfather." The other day we were feasting on osso bucco being prepared by Italian jewelry maker Paolo Migati and Michael showed off a shirt given him by a friend. On the back was an ad for "Corleone's," an importer/exporter in New York. Also printed was their slogan. It read, of course, "We make you an offer you can't refuse." ...

AMONG the dishes being prepared in honor of Mom on Mother's Day, Auntie Pasto's on Kapahulu is featuring "Chicken stuffed with four cheeses and Italian sausage." Sounds more like Dad, doesn't it? ... Yet another Italian eatery opens Sunday in the Hawaiian Village at the Rainbow Bazaar. Sergio's aims at recreating the eatery run for 18 years in Waikiki by the late Sergio Battistetti. The new restaurant, designed to resemble a Tuscan Farmhouse, will be managed by Larry Schmaus, who was GM of Sergio's in Waikiki from 1988-96 ... And Cliff Laughton is still planning to open the Bistro in the old Alfred's location in Century Center. Many of us feel the original Bistro on Kapiolani, owned by Karl Diebold and Mike Pirics, was once the best restaurant in Honolulu ...

Can-Cannes

THOSE clever folks running the Hawai'i International Film Festival, headed by Chuck Boller, came up with a grand alternative name for the proceedings. With Signature Dole Cannery as a sponsor, they've taken to calling themselves "The Can(nes) Film Festival." But why do they schedule "Under the Moonlight" on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.? ...

YET another film award for Edgy Lee. Not only did her film, "Waikiki in the Wake of Dreams," win best cinematography award at the New York Film Festival, but the film was also recognized by filmmaking peers for "Best Editing" in the Documentary Film Category ... And Hawaii will be getting nationwide recognition when Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion" show filmed in Hawaii in January is used as a part of Public Radio fund-raisers. The KHPR fund-raising begins April 24 with the "Prairie Home Companion" show airing April 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. ...

'Vagina' pays off

THERE are a lot of happy campers at the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal hotline, recipients of $8,000 from Jam Theatricals and Compadres, who produced "The Vagina Monologues" and a pre-show fiesta respectively. It might seem like unlikely work to aid the cause against domestic violence -- until you see the show, when you'll realize how a discussion of the subject can bring about both humor and serious rumination ... Sorry to learn of the death of entertainer Moe Keale, who died of heart failure. I mentioned him just last week as coining the nickname of DJ Brickwood Galuteria. Moe, who had a great sense of humor, dubbed him "Driftwood Cafeteria." ...
