Hawaii

When Roy’s is booked,
it helps to know the owner

WHEN the crew of "ER" was shooting a scene at Dillingham Airfield on the North Shore -- a terminal patient wanted to skydive before he dies -- one interested observer was Ken Anderson, owner of Drop Zone, who knows something about emergency rooms. It was back on Dec. 2 of last year that his canopy collapsed during a dive when caught by a gust of wind while he was 60 feet in the air. "Air Tugie," his nickname, was airlifted by a military medevac chopper to Queen's with a broken back, pelvis and compound fracture of his femur. He wasn't expected to make it through the night, but he's recovering. And there he was, watching the "ER" crew and living up to what one doctor was heard to say after surgery: "That's one tough haole!" ...

LIKE minds think alike. June Jones, Warren Haruki and Allen Ikawa all share an affiliation with UH. Jones is head football coach, Haruki is chair of the UH Foundation and a 2002 Distinguished alum, and Ikawa is a UH Regent. But it would seem that the three also have a preference of where to go to get away from it all. They each recently bought a golf villa at Fairway Villas in Waikoloa Beach Resort ... Which brings us to Waikoloa president Thos Rohr and Pebble Beach owner Dick Ferris. The two ran into each other in Orlando and decided to dine together at the local Roy's at Bay Hill. They were told the wildly successful eatery had a waiting list longer than the carte de vin. But sometimes it's who you know. Rohr pulled out his cellular, hit the speed dial and reached Roy Yamaguchi in L.A. The result: Rohr and Ferris found themselves seated at the best table in the house ...

What's Nubla?

HAD a lovely breakfast with S.F. KPIX-TV magazine show hostess Malou Nubla at the Kahala Mandarin before she headed back to ready for rating sweeps. I've followed her career on TV in S.F. for years, but this was our first face-to-face meeting and I found her just as sweet as she is beautiful. She loved Alan Wong's, to nobody's surprise, but absolutely raved about the Kona coffee at the hotel. I promised to bring her some on my next trip to the Bay Area ...

THAT huge tent put up in the open space at the Kahala Mandarin was for a birthday bash for Georg Rafael, the former Hawaiian Regent GM who left to join Bob Burns with Regent International, spinning off to end up as head of the elegant Rafael Hotel chain ...

FOOD writer/musician Jo McGarry joined the Irish Hearts for the group's final performance as a group, a benefit for the young daughter of O'Toole's waitress Laurie Dinwiddie. Jo's expanding into another venture, co-hosting a sports show on KCCN with Bobby Curran. And she hopes to begin yet another venture with Curran soon, but we'll let them tell you about that ...

Once in love with Amy

THE concert starring Amy Hanaiali'i at the Hawaii Theatre was a delight, opening with three "Aunties" who inspired young Amy into her personalized style. They are Leina'ala Haili, Kealoha Kalama and Genoa Keawe, who can still hold a note seemingly forever. And Amy appears to have dropped her last name, Gilliom, for professional reasons ...
