Budget cuts would hurt
Big Isle police, chief says

He warns of 17 officer layoffs if a
7.7 percent trim becomes effective

Associated Press

HILO >> Big Island Police Chief James Correa said 17 officers would have to be laid off if the department's budget is cut to help balance the Hawaii County budget.

Correa also told the County Council that 17 other vacancies would be left unfilled.

The Council had asked department heads to report on the impact of a 7.7 percent reduction in their respective operating budgets.

Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira responded that two fire stations would have to be closed, and it would take more time for firefighters to respond to calls.

Councilman Dominic Yagong said it would be ridiculous for the county to have fewer police officers and firefighters.

Mayor Harry Kim's proposed budget is $8.1 million short of the $202.8 million he needs to run the county.

Instead of trimming operating budgets, Kim has said he will propose raising property taxes.
