UH open house features
scientific demonstrations

Faculty and students in SOEST
programs will host activities

Many new scientific activities and demonstrations are planned during the sixth biennial open house Friday and Saturday at the University of Hawaii School of Ocean & Earth Science & Technology.

The school will host about 3,000 grade-school students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, and the general public is invited to see the work in ocean, earth, atmosphere and space sciences from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The events will take place in the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, the Marine Sciences and Pacific Ocean Science & Technology buildings and surrounding areas.

Faculty, students and staff will present interactive demonstrations, videos, poster presentations, laboratory tours, state-of-the-art computer animation, high-tech equipment displays and creative learning activities.

Maps, schedules and a program of events will be available at an information booth. On-campus parking will be available in the Dole Street parking structure.

SOEST, founded in 1988, includes the Departments of Oceanography, Ocean & Resources Engineering, Meteorology and Geology & Geophysics.

Also included are the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, Natural Energy Institute, Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory, Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research and International Pacific Research Program.

The Sea Grant College Program and Space Grant Program also are part of the school.
