Chevy Teves went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs as the Waianae Seariders motored to an 8-2 home win over Pearl City in an Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball game yesterday. Seariders overpower Pearl City

jkaneshiro@starbulletin.comTeves led a 13-hit Waianae attack as the Seariders improved to 5-0 in the OIA West, a half-game behind Aiea (6-0). Pearl City fell to 3-2.
"We've been telling our kids just keep working hard and good things will happen and today was one of the best team efforts we've had all year," Waianae coach Glenn Tokunaga said. "We hit the ball well, the pitching kept us in the game all the way and our defense didn't make too many errors."
After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, Waianae scored three in the bottom of the first and two more in the second to take control early.
All of Waianae's first-inning damage came with two out. Cid Moses and Calvin Uyechi walked and Teves doubled to right field to score Moses. Keone Taaca was hit by a pitch and Kalani Viernes followed with a two-run single to center.
Teves, a junior shortstop named after the hot-rods his father enjoys working on, singled in each of his next three at-bats, driving two runs with his last hit in the sixth inning.
"The bats are coming around," Teves said. "We're an aggressive team it's just that we weren't hitting the ball before. Now we're banging so we can be even more aggressive."
The run support was enough for pitchers Dane Awana and Moses, who combined to strike out eight and limited the Chargers to three hits.
Awana got a boost from his defense in the fifth when Pearl City loaded the bases with no out. Darrick Tanigawa lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Brandon Wythes. But the throw to the infield was cut off and the Seariders cut down Nolan Kugiya trying to advance to third.
"At that point in the game we were willing to trade one run for two outs," Tokunaga said.
The Seariders put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth, capped by Teves' two RBI single.
