Hawaii Pacific upset Brigham Young-Hawaii -- NCAA Division II's top-rated men's team -- to win the inaugural Pacific West Conference tennis tournament yesterday, snapping the Seasiders' unbeaten streak at 23. HPU knocks off No. 1
BYUH to win Pac WestHPU, the nation's 10th ranked team, swept all three doubles matches on the way to clinching the title.
"That was the difference today," HPU coach Henry Sommerville said. "I couldn't be happier with the way our doubles played."
Seasiders coach David Porter praised HPU, but said his team might take the loss as a "wake up call" heading into the postseason.
BYUH played with a shuffled lineup without No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles player Peter Madarassy, in Hungary for his father's funeral. He has missed the entire tournament.
The Seasiders' women's team, which is also No. 1 in the country, won the conference tournament 5-1 over No. 14 HPU.
Vulcans get sweep: Hawaii-Hilo completed a men-women sweep of Montana State-Billings to each take third in the tournament. Hilo's women won 9-0, while the men took their match 8-1.
Hawaii sports company nominated for Emmys
Hawaii-based sports marketing company TEAM Unlimited was nominated for two Emmy Awards for its production of the 2000 XTERRA World Championship on Maui.The one hour special, aired nationwide on CBS Jan. 13, was nominated in the categories of Outstanding Edited Sports Special and Outstanding Film and Electronic Camera Work by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
XTERRA is an off-road, multi-sport event that combines swimming, mountain biking and trail running.
Wahine take 2 from Louisiana Tech
Sheri Oronoz threw a three-hit shutout and pounded out four hits to help the Hawaii softball team sweep a doubleheader 5-0 and 5-1 over Louisiana Tech at Ruston, La., yesterday.Oronoz (17-7) pitched her gem in the first game and got all the support she needed by driving in three runs, one on a solo homer in the fifth. Kate Judd tied her career high with her ninth home run.
Shannon Tabion (3-2) took the ball in the second game and held the Bulldogs to one run on six hits in her first WAC start. She struck out nine and walked two.

Sea Warriors swept in doubleheader at Pomona
Hawaii Pacific dropped both ends of a baseball doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona yesterday, falling 10-9 in the first game and 8-6 in the second.HPU led 9-0 after three innings, but Victor Yoshida's game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh capped the Broncos' 10-run comeback.
Brian Hamilton had three hits and three RBIs for the Sea Warriors.
In the second game HPU's bats awoke in the last inning, but a 3-run rally -- which included RBI doubles by Alika Kuraoka and Andrew Stith -- fell short.
OSU, weather hold off Vulcans: Hawaii-Hilo fell 10-2 in the first half of a doubleheader at Oregon State. The Vulcans rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning of the second game only to see weather stop play with them down 10-9.
New adult football league forms with 5 teams
Five teams have been formed in a new adult amateur 8-man tackle football league on Oahu.The OHL starts league play May 11 with free admission at the Central Oahu Regional Park. Teams are still recruiting players. For more information call the league commissioner at 782-3937.
