Kids convention kicks off to help high school move
Adult Friends for Youth, in cooperation with the state Department of Education, has kicked off its 11th Annual Student Transition Convention to help elementary students make the transition to middle school.Inspired by entertainer Frank DeLima, the convention addresses students' mental health and aims to help them handle the emotional and physical changes they encounter as they grow from children to adolescents.
The convention features comedy by DeLima, bands, presentations by students and community leaders and a panel to answer questions.
Coming conventions, which run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and their sponsors are:

Kaneohe workshop to show how to make lei
The city Department of Parks and Recreation will conduct a free Hawaiian lei-making workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, at Windward Mall in Kaneohe.The hili, haku, wili, humupapa, kui and kipuu lei-making methods will be taught.
Participants are asked to bring their own materials, including clippers or scissors, flowers with three-inch long stems, leaves, ferns and raffia.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

Big Isle arrest nets drugs and explosives
Big Island police and federal agents say they arrested three people after a search of a Kau residence turned up 29 grams of crystal methamphetamine, weapons, explosives, marijuana and stolen goods.The three arrested Wednesday were a 40-year-old man, 41-year-old woman and a juvenile boy, who was released to his mother the same day, police said.
Officers executing a search warrant at the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates residence found 59 grams of dried, processed marijuana; 208 marijuana plants up to 3 feet tall; hydrocodone pills; a .45-caliber submachine gun; a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, an altered .30-caliber rifle; various ammunition; a blasting cap; a seal bomb explosive and more than $1,000 of stolen goods.
The woman and man remained in custody. He was also being held pending nine warrants from Honolulu with bail exceeding $20,000, police said.
Police initiated the search after receiving numerous complaints from residents about drug activity, threats to individuals, thefts and burglaries.
Fire from laundry room destroys home in Keaau
A Keaau family is homeless after a fire destroyed their home in the Hawaiian Acres subdivision Friday night, the Big Island fire department reported.The sound of an explosion woke up a man sleeping upstairs who discovered his laundry room in flames and evacuated four children from the home at about 11:30 p.m.
Fourteen firefighters and 10 volunteer firefighters responded. They had the fire under control at 12:25 a.m. and extinguished an hour later.
Damage is estimated at $150,000. The fire department said the two-story, 2,850-square-foot home is considered unlivable.
There was a report of one minor injury but no one was taken to the hospital.
The cause of the fire was under investigation yesterday.

Girl charges boyfriend threatened her with knife
An 18-year-old man is being accused by his 15-year-old girlfriend of threatening her with a knife and refusing to let her leave his bedroom.Police said the girl reported the Wednesday incident after she was arrested on suspicion of running away from home. The girl had been staying with her boyfriend for about two weeks.
The man, who is being investigated on suspicion of kidnapping, terroristic threatening and violating a temporary restraining order, turned himself in at the Wahiawa police station.

2 men sought in alleged carjacking and beating
Police were looking for two men suspected of robbing a man of his car and driving his passenger to a Kalihi Jack in the Box and beating him.Police said the man and his passenger, both 40, were parked at North Hotel and Smith streets around 2:30 a.m. yesterday when the suspects approached and told the man to get out.
The men drove the victim, who was sitting in the back seat, to the restaurant at North King and Umi streets and allegedly beat him, police said.
A police officer alerted to the kidnapping and robbery report spotted the car as it headed toward Middle Street and followed it to an area of Likelike Highway, where the two suspects fled.
The victim, who was still in the car, showed signs of being beaten and was taken to Queen's Medical Center in good condition.

Fatal fall from hotel floor under police investigation
Police were investigating a case of a man who fell from the 30th floor of a Waikiki hotel and died yesterday.Police said a witness heard a "loud crash" at the Kalakaua Avenue hotel around 5:15 a.m. yesterday and discovered a "hole" in the ceiling and the deceased man on the fifth floor.
Police located the man's wallet, which contained his identification.
There were no signs of foul play, and the man had injuries consistent with a fall, police said.
Man, 63, dies in waters off Queen's Beach
A 63-year-old man died yesterday after being pulled out of the water at Queen's Beach at 2:45 p.m.The man was found 20 yards offshore and in cardiac arrest, an ambulance dispatcher said. He was taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital where he died at 5:05 p.m. after being taken off life support, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Farrington auto collision sends 4 to the hospital
A head-on collision between a pickup truck and a van last night on the Farrington Highway near Fort Barrette Road sent four people to the hospital.When the Fire Department arrived on scene at 7:39 p.m. all four occupants were out of the vehicles. A fire department spokesman said the driver was the only occupant of the pick-up truck and there were two passengers in the van.
A paramedic spokesman said the four victims were taken to the Queen's Medical Center; three were in serious condition and one was in stable condition.
