teams play for titlesThe Brigham Young-Hawaii men's team advanced to the final by shutting down Chaminade 7-0. The women beat Chaminade by the same 7-0 score.
Hawaii Pacific made it to the finals by beating Hawaii-Hilo. The Sea Warrior men won 8-1 and the women won 7-2.
The HPU women swept Hilo in straight sets in singles but dropped two doubles matches.
The championship will be at 11:30 a.m. at the BYUH tennis courts in Laie.
Mainor wins: Paige Mainor beat Kodee Domingo, but the Hawaii women's tennis team lost to Nevada 6-1 at Reno, Nev., yesterday.
Mainor got Hawaii's only point by beating Domingo 6-1, 6-2 from the No. 5 spot and teamed up with Lauren Fitzgerald to win a doubles match.
Hawaii Pacific drops another pair
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team lost another road doubleheader yesterday, 7-1 and 3-2 to Cal Poly Pomona at Pomona, Calif.Senior second baseman Wade Taguchi went 2-for-6 with an RBI. He holds HPU's single-season records for home runs and runs batted in and will conclude his college career today with a doubleheader against Cal Poly Pomona.
The Sea Warriors fell to 18-29 after losing its sixth game on a seven-game road trip.
Hilo booster club to disband after season
Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan booster club President Harvey Tajiri has announced that the club will disband at the end of the season, citing a lack of communication with athletics director Kathleen McNally."The relationship between the board and the athletic department leaves a lot to be desired," Tajiri said. "We simply cannot continue as things are going."
The booster club was formed in 1970 as a vehicle to promote the university and was a factor in its move from independent to NAIA to NCAA Div. II.
Oronoz outworks LaTech, but Wahine split
The Hawaii softball team split a doubleheader with Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., yesterday, winning the first game 3-0 but dropping the second 4-1.Sheri Oronoz did the work for the Wahine (27-17) in the first game, limiting the Bulldogs (19-14) to three hits while collecting two hits of her own. Denise Dahlberg was perfect ahead of her in the order, going 3-for-3 and scoring two runs.
Melissa Coogan was not as effective as Oronoz in the second game, giving up four runs in 4 2/3 innings.
