Is a reference to God in a public school conduct code a violation of the U.S. Constitution or offensive to secular society? Public forum to discuss
McKinleys student code
Star-Bulletin staff
The public will have the opportunity to voice opinions on the subject at a forum at McKinley High School's Hirata Hall at 6:30 p.m. April 24.
The school's student code of honor, which dates back to 1927, declares a list of principles that students uphold. Included is "brotherhood of races all combined and love for God and all mankind." The code appears in poster form around the school and is sung at school events.
Hawaii Citizens for the Separation of State and Church objected to the reference last year. The school refused to delete the reference on the basis of a state attorney general's opinion.
Public discussion will follow brief presentations of legal issues by Brent White, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii; Mitchell Kahle, president of Hawaii Citizens for the Separation of State and Church; and Ed Clark, president of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, Hawaii chapter, sponsor of the forum.
