The Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis teams are in the top spots of the latest NCAA Division II men's and women's tennis rankings.

The men have been No. 1 for three ranking periods now, while the women moved into the top spot this week after beating previous No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic on April 5. Both votes were unanimous.

The four Hawaii small colleges start PacWest Tournament play today at Laie.

Honolulu Marathon champs to run in Boston

Mbarak Hussein, the champion of the 1998 and 2001 Honolulu marathons and Lee Bong Ju, the 1993 winner, are among the top contenders in the Boston Marathon on Monday.

There are 24 Hawaii residents entered in the event, including 2001 Honolulu kamaaina champion Jonathan Lyau. The marathon will be televised on ESPN2 at 5:55 a.m.

The day before the Boston race, 1997 Honolulu women's champion Svetlana Morganova will try to win the London Marathon for the first time.

Maui's Oyafuso lifts to a gold medal

Wayne Oyafuso of Makawao, Maui won a gold medal in the National Masters Weightlifting Championships in Baton Rouge, La., last weekend. Oyafuso won the gold in the 56-kilogram (123-pound) weight class in the 75-79 age group.

Michael Harada of Honolulu was second in the 85-kg (187-pound) class in the 44-49 age group. Harada, a long-time local competitor, lifted 102.5 kg (226 pounds) in the snatch and 135 kg (297 pounds) in the clean and jerk.

Sea Warriors roughed up on trip

The Hawaii Pacific baseball team's road trip went from bad to worse yesterday in a 10-5 loss to Cal State San Bernardino.

The Coyotes scored seven runs in the first two innings off Keola McCallum.

Jonathan Torres, Alika Kuraoka and Derek Little all paired hits for the Sea Warriors (18-27), who are 1-5 with two games left on their trip and the season.
