Thrift 'Encore'

Pre-owned fashions get a second look when the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary hosts "Encore! Encore!" -- its 15th annual Celebrity Thrift Fashion Show -- April 20 at the Sheraton-Waikiki.

Among the celebrity models donning business, casual, aloha and formal evening attire will be Hawaii's first lady, Vicky Cayetano; Honolulu's first lady, Ramona Harris; Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono; and a TV news posse including Trini Kaopuiki, Pamela Young, Jill Kuramoto, Kathy Muneno, Jodi Leong and Malia Mattoch.

Guests will have an opportunity to purchase thrift fashions at below-thrift costs at a fashion boutique open before and after the show. Proceeds will benefit Salvation Army programs.

Hours for the boutique are 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The luncheon and fashion show will start at 11:45 a.m. Tickets are $40 ($20 tax-deductible) per person. Call Natalie at 988-2136 for tickets.

Don't forget the guys

When it comes to shopping, men have always been viewed as bored bystanders, but things are a-changing! Today's real men care about the look they want to project.

To make it easy for the guys, there's no frilly luncheon involved as Kahala Mall presents "It Takes Two," a show of men's wear from 1 to 1:30 p.m. April 20, featuring togs from Reyn's and Macy's. Easy brah, check 'em out.

Eyes on 'Clothes Minded'

Students of apparel design and merchandising at the University of Hawaii will stage their annual spring fashion show April 21 at the Sheraton-Waikiki Maui Ballroom.

"Clothes Minded" will feature the work of six senior designers who will present their own visions, plus three collections defined by the themes "East Meets West," "Haute Couture" and "Decades," inspired by designs of the past century.

There will also be a sneak preview of 22 garments by junior designers, hinting at next year's show, and door prizes donated by the community.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. for the event, followed by a Chinese luncheon at noon. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through the fashion program by calling 956-2244.

'American Beauty' staged

St. John's fall 2002 collection will make its Hawaii debut April 27 in a fashion show to benefit the Associated Chinese University Women Scholarship Fund.

"The American Beauty Fashion Show" will take place at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel, beginning with boutique sales in the reception area from 9 a.m. Doors will open at 11 a.m., followed by a noon luncheon and 1 p.m. show.

Among designs that will be shown are mandarin-collar jackets in plaid, tailored suits for day, and a palette that started with red, white and blue softened into teal, magenta and periwinkle.

Dalton Tanonaka, Hawaii lieutenant governor candidate and former CNN news anchor, will be the master of ceremonies for the event. And adding more excitement to the festivities, St. John Boutique Ala Moana will offer a merchandise gift certificate of $1,000 as a door prize.

Tickets are $45 general and $60 for a ramp-side seating. To purchase tickets, call Nora Chong at 988-6197 or St. John Ala Moana at 971-1166.

St. John was founded on a shoestring in 1962 by designer Marie St. John, whose lack of finances led her to knit her own clothing. Since then the company has become a women's wear powerhouse, earning $365 million in sales last year.
