On the good side
of the law

LEAVE IT to a pair of local attorneys to show me how a townie party is thrown ... last weekend Brad Coates and David Hayakawa proved creativity is alive and well, drawing more than 1,500 people to events Friday and Saturday.

Coates, managing partner at Coates & Frey, spearheaded a fund-raiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation aboard the Falls of Clyde Friday. Now in its sixth year, Coates' Honolulu Boys Bunch raised several thousand dollars at the "April Foolish Fun-Raiser," which featured Gordon Biersch draft beer and a wine tasting. Don't Share Underwear also performed...

SATURDAY'S party at the W Hotel was strictly invitation only. Hayakawa, Chop Salon's Michael Joseph and the Slopes of Diamond Head Hui were fashionably late in throwing a belated Mardi Gras party, complete with 5,000 bead necklaces. The dress code was "less is more" said Hayakawa, who gave out panties as party favors to the ladies. Guys were encouraged to trade beads for the underwear. Sounds like a fair trade to me...

DJ Darryl Oyadamori of LA Image also kept the crowd grooving, and more than $1,000 worth of prizes were given away to attendees. Hayakawa says the Slopes of Diamond Head Hui bash will be an annual event, modeled after a yearly house party he threw while living in the area. If you missed this year's fun, mark your calendar now for 2003 ...

LAST WEEKEND also marked the start of Daylight Savings Time on the big rock. Why should we care? Well, if you regularly watch cable TV, daylight savings will change your viewing habits. Case in point: Tuesday is my weekly appointment with the first family of rock on MTV's "The Osbournes." I sat in front of the tube, cracked open a beer and relaxed in anticipation of laughs to come. No dice, though. DST pushed the show's start up an hour, leaving me blubbering at the television, much like Ozzy Osbourne did when he couldn't get the satellite dish remote to work ...

Orange County, Calif., rock superheroes The Aquabats perform May 10 at World Cafe starting at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. to all ages.

The Aquabats' current release, "Myths, Legends, and Other Amazing Adventures, Vol. 2" is a collection of unreleased material and B-sides by the group, which also promises to wow fans with a "incredibly perilous and hazardous concert experience." Ouch ...
