Halle Berry returns to isles
to shoot James Bond film

THE local film office must be thrilled to learn that not only will scenes from the next James Bond movie, "Die Another Day," be filmed in Hawaii, but joining the Bondsman, Pierce Brosnan, in the film will be Oscar-winning Halle Berry. She was here some years back making the film "Race the Sun" with Jim Belushi, about the Konawaena School's entry in the World Solar Challenge in Australia. It's obvious Halle never thought she'd win an Oscar back when she was making perfume commercials that are still running on TV ... There are some wild, visionary things going on in the array of paintings by June Hammond, inspired by titles apropos of nothing by writer Jon Ashbery, on view at the Contemporary Museum in Makiki Heights. There are also some tent material structures done in a variety of architectural styles by three Cubans scattered throughout the museum grounds, and making a great place for small kids to play and hide ...

IT was a Big Isle get-together at Ferguson's Pub this week when early morning bartender Kent Whitman celebrated his birthday. A lot of former Big Isle residents showed up, including George "Granny Goose" Groves, whose dad used to play cribbage back in Papaiko with the father of Kent and his brother, Jim Whitman. And both Groves and Puna Chillingworth used to deliver papers by riding down a watery flume. The amazing thing about "Granny" is that despite his name, he never seems to age, looking much the same as I remember him 30 years ago. Helps to look good if you're on TV ...

Final beat of "Hearts"

THERE'S going to be a fund-raiser Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. at O'Toole's for waitress Laurie Dinwiddie's daughter, Kellie, who recently came out of a coma. Laurie had to stay at home to care for her daughter, and pub patrons have helped her with ever-growing bills. Saturday should help a lot, as the disbanded Gaelic musicians known collectively as Irish Hearts have agreed to perform one last-ever performance. Proceeds of the $25 admission will go to help pay young Kellie's medical bills, and Don Murphy, whose bar and grill is located directly across the street from O'Toole's, is preparing substantial pupus and throwing in a free drink for good measure. The "Hearts," which will go on beating separately after Saturday, are Lisa Gomes, Larry Levin, Kevin O'Kennedy & Curtis Vandeloop, with a guest appearance by Jo McGarry ...

FRIENDS of the late Anita Liptak, who died over the weekend, will be gathering April 20 at Haleiwa Joe's in Haiku Gardens for a liquid bon voyage. Friends of Anita, a former Press Club regular back when there was a Press Club, can make arrangements to attend by calling Lee Schaller at 395-1839 ...

Wall of Spam

GUINNESS should take note -- with Spam at the top of the wish list of the Hawaii Food Bank, organizers of the drive are hoping to collect enough to top the current "Wall of Spam" record, which is 3,390 cans at the Spam Museum in Austin, Minn., home of Hormel. Can contributions are being accepted at the Restaurant Row project's management offices. The wall begins forming Friday at noon -- free entertainment ...
