Maryknoll improved to 3-7 with the win, while MPI dropped to 8-2 after their second loss in the past week to a team with a sub-.500 record.
Matsumoto, a 5-foot-2 freshman who barely weighs 100 pounds, scattered five hits over 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win. He started the game and was relieved by Brandon Goshima in the third inning. He reentered the game in the fourth and finished the contest.
"It was just his mixing of pitches and he had enough wildness to keep them off balance," Maryknoll coach Duane Eldredge said. "His curveball was working real well and when he throws strikes he can be tough."
With one out in the top of fifth, Ortiz doubled down the third-base line and moved to third on an errant throw. Seminara's two-out single to right field scored Ortiz with the winning run.
