Bows close by Ricky Bauer pitched the best game of his young collegiate career to claim his first victory as a Rainbow last night at Murakami Stadium.

Hawaii comes back to end its
tournament with a winning recordBy Al Chase
achase@starbulletin.comHawaii combined timely hits with seven walks, five hit batters and three Lewis-Clark State errors to defeat the Warriors, 14-3, and take second place in the Ohana Hotels & Resorts Rainbow Easter Baseball Tournament before 952 fans.
The Rainbows, UC Riverside and Birmingham-Southern all finished with 4-2 records, but the 'Bows had the largest run differential (plus 10) of the three teams. The UCR Highlanders, with a plus four run differential, finish in third place.
Bauer, a freshman right-hander from Mid-Pacific Institute, pitched eight innings, allowed seven hits, walked no one, hit a batter and struck out three. He went to a full count on just one batter. It was his longest outing of the year.
Hawaii presented Bauer with plenty of breathing room in the top of the second inning. The 'Bows loaded the bases three times and cleared them twice in scoring eight runs against LCS starter Collin Perschon and three relief pitchers.
Despite the big lead, Bauer just tried to do the same thing he did when he retired the Warriors in order in the bottom of the first.
"I felt comfortable coming out of the bullpen. Coach always says once you have them bleeding, you go for the throat and shut them out," said Bauer, who has been working on command of his fastball and having the same arm speed with his change-up.
He threw 79 pitches of which 58 were strikes.
"He just kept the ball down and moved his pitches in and out," said UH catcher Brian Bock. "Ricky didn't use his slider much, but stayed within himself."
Bauer estimated he threw five fastballs for every change-up.
The Rainbows had five hits and made good use of three walks and three hit batters in the second inning. They loaded the bases with no out as Derek Honma walked and Kevin Gilbride and Tim Montgomery singled. Honma and the other runners advanced on a wild pitch. Gilbride scored and Montgomery took third on Brian Bock's groundout.
Julian Russell was hit by a pitch and took second on Arthur Guillen's RBI single to center. Lane Nogawa was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Russell and Guillen scored on Brent Cook's double that one-hopped the right-center field wall. Gregg Omori lined the first pitch he saw into left-center field for a two-run single, scoring Nogawa and Cooke.
Omori would move to second and third while Honma and Gilbride were drawing walks, then come home when Montgomery was the third 'Bow hit by a pitch in the inning.
"Anytime you get a lot of runs on the board, everyone can relax and play out of the right side of the brain," said UH coach Mike Trapasso.
Omori picked up three more RBIs in the fifth inning when he lined a bases-clearing double into the left-field corner.
The 'Bows scored their final three runs in the seventh on singles by Cook and Gilbride, a walk, a balk and three LCS errors.
Hawaii returns to Western Athletic Conference play Thursday when a three-game series with Nevada starts.
UC Riverside 6, Hawaii Pacific 3: The Highlanders rallied for five runs in the final four innings to overtake the Sea Warriors, who led 3-1 after five innings on the strength of Derek Little's three-run homer to left with two outs in the fifth.
Birmingham-Southern 10, Hawaii-Hilo 7: Chad Agustin belted two home runs and Johnny Dudoit and Nalei Sooto hit roundtrippers for the Vulcans, but it wasn't enough to offset the Panthers' 15-hit attack.
