Kamehameha pitcher Leo Sing Chow finished the season 13-0, giving up just three earned runs in 87 innings.

A perfect ending

The stars

A complete game, a state championship and a home run in her final at-bat.

After an outstanding senior season, everything fell into place on the last day of Leo Sing Chow's high school softball career at Kamehameha.

Sing Chow hasn't had a chance yet to slow down during a busy senior year to reflect on her accomplishments, but she has made a decision on where her next step will take her.

The 2002 Star-Bulletin Player of the Year will take her bat and glove over to the Big Island in the fall to join her older sister at the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Sing Chow has made a verbal commitment to UHH, and will sign a letter of intent in early April.

"I went for a visit there and I liked the environment," Sing Chow said. "It's a strong program and my sister goes there. It's home, but away from home."

Tanya Sing Chow, a sophomore at Hilo, also played at Kamehameha and was in the stands when the Warriors beat Kailua for the state title. The sisters will play together in the fall for the first time since Tanya was a senior and Leo was a freshman at Kamehameha.

"She kind of pushed (for me to go to Hilo)," Leo said. "It helped that she's enjoying herself. She said it would be a good place for me."

Also appealing to Leo is the country style of the Big Island.

"I like the feeling. It's relaxed, not too much to do. That's what I like," she said.

Sing Chow may enjoy a relaxed atmosphere off the field, but she gave opponents a lot of stress on the field this season.

Sing Chow was 10-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular season, throwing a pair of no-hitters in the process. She maintained her unblemished record through the state tournament, earning three more wins and allowing just one unearned run in 21 innings while striking out 23 batters.

Her final numbers for the season were staggering: A 13-0 record with a 0.24 ERA in 87 innings pitched -- with just three earned runs allowed. She gave up 33 hits while striking out 99 batters and walking only 15. But her value to the team didn't end in the pitcher's circle. Sing Chow hit .476 (20-for-42), with four doubles, a triple, three home runs and 13 RBIs.

"She's been working hard ever since she's been playing," Tanya Sing Chow said. "When she wants something she normally gets it.

"I don't think she'll have a tough time adjusting (to college)."

Kamehameha coach Ty Sing Chow, Leo's uncle, is the Star-Bulletin Coach of the Year after guiding the Warriors to their first state title since 1998.

JOINING SING CHOW on the first team from Kamehameha are senior shortstop Ashley Ruff -- who will play at Hawaii in the fall -- outfielders Gina Cummings and Brandi Peiler and first baseman Kate Robinson.

"(Ashley's) athleticism makes her special at shortstop," Iolani coach Chris Shimabukuro said. "As a leadoff batter she was difficult to keep off the bases."

Peiler, a sophomore, had a .548 average to repeat as a first-team selection. Cummings, a senior, hit .528. Robinson, another sophomore, hit .500, with 13 RBIs.

Sing Chow's ILH rival, Ianeta Lei of Iolani, is the second pitcher on the first team. Lei, a senior, was 9-2 in the ILH, losing only to Kamehameha. In 72 innings, she struck out 40 and walked just five. Her ERA was 0.97.

Sing Chow and Lei were both first-team selections last year.

Another repeat first-teamer is Baldwin senior catcher Ashlyn Russell.

"She's ferocious," Ty Sing Chow said. "She's intimidating behind (the plate)."

Two Oahu Interscholastic Association infielders are on the first team by virtue of their incredible bats. Kaimuki junior Tyleen Tausaga and Kaiser junior Mary-Ann Tualau both hit over .700 during the regular season.

"(Tausaga) is unbelievable," Shimabukuro said. "She hits for power and average. She is a definite Division I prospect."

Mililani junior Asamura is the first-team utility player. Asamura played in the infield and was 4-0 without allowing a run in the pitcher's circle. She threw two more shutouts in the OIA tournament.

Two speedy outfielders, both juniors, round out the first team. B.J. Shimamoto of Mililani -- a repeat selection -- and Zoie Sevilla of Baldwin were catalysts for their teams, causing problems on the basepaths with their speed and playing well in the outfield.
