Mid-Pacific completes
improbable first half

By Jason Kaneshiro

The Mid-Pacific baseball team continued its improbable roll through the Interscholastic League of Honolulu last night with a 12-0 TKO of Punahou at Aloha Stadium.

The Owls completed the first half of the ILH season at 7-0 in the game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run-rule. Punahou fell to 4-2.

Mid-Pacific swept through the opening round despite having leading returnees Issac Omura, Ryan Leong and Ryan Basco sidelined with various ailments and had coach Dunn Muramaru shaking his head in astonishment after last night's game.

"If you told me we'd be 7-0 I'd be laughing at you, not with the people we have out," Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru said. "The guys that are hurt are scared to come back right now, they think they're going to jinx us."

Mid-Pacific enters the second round, which begins Friday, with a two-game lead over Kamehameha (5-2). In their three wins last week, the Owls outscored their opponents 37-3.

Mid-Pacific shortstop Troy Hanzawa ignited the Owl attack last night by driving in three runs. Jonathan Hee went 3-for-3 and had two runs batted in. Matt Inouye put the Owls over the 10-run barrier in the third inning with a two-run home run into the left field stands.

Justin Pate struck out three and allowed just three hits in picking up the complete-game win for Mid-Pacific. He was also involved in the game's most interesting subplot.

Punahou freshman Jared Pate, Justin's younger brother, took the mound in the second inning in relief of starter Matthew Oda. The siblings, whose previous duels took place in the backyard of their grandmother's house, faced each other with one out in the bottom of the third.

Justin, a senior, took two strikes from little brother before lining a single to right-field. The hit sparked a five-run rally for the Owls.

"I knew he was going to throw a curve ball or something," Justin Pate said. "I know he was dying to get me out and he just wanted it right there, three straight. And I think he made a mistake, I think it was supposed to be a little lower."
