UH splits WAC softball
doubleheader on the road

SAN JOSE, Calif. >> The Hawaii softball team split a conference doubleheader with San Jose State yesterday, dropping the first game 2-1 before rallying for a 9-2 win.

Shortstop Kate Judd hit a two-run homer in the third inning of the second game and was 4-for-5 over both games for UH (26-17, 7-1 Western Athletic Conference). Stacey Porter was just as effective hitting behind her, going 6-for-7.

Melissa Coogan (9-6) got the win in the second game, working all seven innings and giving up one earned run on five hits against the Spartans (14-30, 2-6).

Sheri Oronoz (15-8) took the loss in the opener despite allowing only five Spartans to reach base.

Sea Warriors swept: At Silver City, N.M., Hawaii Pacific was swept by Western New Mexico 5-1 and 18-6.

The 18-run barrage in the second game was the most ever given up by the Sea Warriors.

Brandy Choy Foo went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader for the Sea Warriors (18-12, 4-6 PacWest), connecting for a homer off Angela Slaugh of the Mustangs (23-7, 14-2).

Seasiders swept, too: At Billings, Mont., Brigham Young-Hawaii dropped a doubleheader to Montana State-Billings 5-3 and 1-0.

The Seasiders (9-20, 2-10 PacWest) wasted another strong piching performance by Kassiopeia Hood, who lost her second 1-0 game of the season. She limited the Yellowjackets (3-15, 3-13) to three hits in the snow, but BYUH managed only two hits.

Hilo splits in East: At Tampa, Fla., Nancy Vega hit a single between the first and second basemen in the sixth inning as the Vulcans salvaged a split with Tampa.

Tampa beat Kristine Kahoalii 1-0 in the first game, but Hilo (26-11) won the second 2-1 on Vega's heroics. Leinani Hashida scored the winning run and was 3-for-3 while Tara Martinez limited the home team to two hits.

Hursty, Tennant win Tinman Biathlon

Chad and Matt Seymore finished second and third in the Tinman Biathlon at Ala Moana Beach Park yesterday, but were 30 seconds too late to beat Peter Hursty.

The 29-year-old Hursty won the men's race with a time of 25:40 to beat the Seymore teens.

Deirdre Tennant was the fastest woman and sixth overall finisher, completing the course in 27:37. Samantha Moran finished more than four minutes behind Tennant for second, while Vanessa Rea was third.

The contest consisted of a 2.7 mile run and 800-meter swim.

Seasiders start trip in dominant fashion

The Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis teams started an eight-day road swing with perfect efforts in Montgomery, Ala., yesterday.

The men beat Alabama State 7-0, while the women beat the Hornets 7-0 then shut out Montevallo 6-0. Both BYUH teams are undefeated this year, with the No. 2 women 15-0 and the No. 1 men 16-0.

The women were especially dominant, losing just one game in their 12 singles matches.

Wahine finish third in water polo tourney

The Hawaii water polo team lost to UC San Diego 5-2 and 6-4 to finish third in the Rainbow Challenge yesterday.

Karin van Hoff scored three times for UH (10-10) against the Tritons (15-8).
