1969: Tulips take
long flight to get
to Hawaii for Easter

SOME 15,000 fresh tulips will be flown directly to Honolulu from Holland for the table decorations for the Easter Seal Fashion Brunch at the Royal Hawaiian Easter Sunday. Emma Veary and Kathryn Murray are two of the models who'll appear in the show. (March 31, 1969) ... When Cherry Blossom Queen Kathy Horio was called out of the audience at a recent Society of Seven show and asked to do a hula, she stunned many Outrigger onlookers with an outstanding dance. Many were unaware that Kathy is a professional dancer in Tavana's Polynesian Revue at Queen's Surf. (April 3, 1970) ...

MAIL orders are pouring in for the Lisa Minnelli show at the HIC April 21. Her copping an Oscar for "Cabaret" certainly won't hurt sales, though the show has been an almost certain sell-out since it was announced. (April 4, 1973) ... Sherry Sellers is still sick about the fact she preceded her husband, adman Tom Sellers, back from the Mainland by a day. After putting her on a plane for the Islands, he stopped off at La Scala in Beverly Hills for a late supper and who should come trooping in, Oscars held high, but Jack Nicholson and a host of other Academy Award winners fresh from the theater. Sherry, who likes to star-gaze as much as the next person, had to settle for viewing the ceremony on TV. (March 31, 1976) ...

FORMER Star-Bulletin chief photographer Ron Edmonds, now with the Associated Press, took the dramatic photo appearing on the front page of yesterday's "Extra" editions and in papers around the world. It showed armed Secret Service men surrounding the would-be assassin of President Reagan while three shooting victims lay on the ground in front of him. Edmonds could be seen taking his photos in the dramatic television coverage of the attempted assassination. (March 31, 1981) ...

NOSTALGIA fans can mark May 18 and 19 on their calendars. That's when Rosemary Clooney, Helen O'Connell, Martha Raye and Kay Starr bring their show, "The New 4 girls," to the Sheraton-Waikiki Ballroom. They'll be backed by Del Courtney and his orchestra, and Del goes back as far as any of them do. (April 6, 1982) ... Channel 9 reporter Elisa Yadao is back in the electronic age (and medium) after a hiatus in New Mexico. While her husband was working at a Navajo Indian reservation, the two lived in a cabin with no electricity. One KGMB cohort suggested they at least rig a light in the outhouse so they could say they wired a head for a reservation. (All the good ones are old ones, so don't complain.) (April 3, 1985) ...

LOOK who slipped out of town yesterday morning after overnighting at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's plush new Alii Tower. None other than Elizabeth Taylor with current traveling companion Malcolm Forbes, publisher of Forbes magazine. Three members of the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" flew in with the couple on Forbes' private jet Monday evening, and all left yesterday for Singapore. Also in the party were General Motors Chairman Roger Smith and his wife, Apple Computers Chairman John Scully and U.S. Chief of Protocol Archibald Roosevelt. In case the National Enquirer is reading this, Taylor and Forbes not only had separate rooms, but stayed on separate floors of the Alii Tower. (April 6, 1988) ...

LIKE most successful funerals, yesterday's Kawaiahao Church service for football coach Charlie Kaaihue was a combination of poignant moments and humorous reminiscences. Kaaihue died after hitting his first tee shot last week while golfing with his two brothers, Kala and Henry "Kapono" Kaaihue. Kapono provided the poignancy when he sang "My Hero," an obviously personal choice. And Larry Price provided a touch of gentle humor when he stated that Kaaihue once had "the most powerful job in the State of Hawaii: starter at the Ala Wai golf course." (April 3, 1991) ...
